my pink brush massages my scalp. i feel my gaze stumble into my vanity mirror. i smile proudly. i break my stare and apply a coat of mascara. i feel my caramel hair once more.
"courtney, are you ready?" mother asks from down stairs.
"hold on one second!" i stand up from my vanity and look into my full length mirror. i fashion a short plaid skirt paired with a slightly cropped white top. my tan hand reaches for the pearls on my dresser and i gladly place them on my neck. i spray one sprits of perfume and immediately rush out of my tidy bedroom.
"courtney, seriously!" she says as my feet nearly trip over themselves stepping down the broad stairs.
"i'm barely late" i glance at the elegant clock hanging above the grand double doors.
she sighs and watches me run out the door before shutting it behind her. "i didn't even get a chance to say goodbye to dad!" i wine while walking on the gravel that rests on my large drive way.
"you knew perfectly well that he has a business meeting in an hour and won't be in the mood to deal with your childish ordeals" the well dressed woman clicks the car keys and gestures for me to get in.
"like saying goodbye?" i ask as i buckle my seatbelt.
a wave of an awkward quietness takes over the vehicle.
"how's that boy you've been having over at the house lately?" she pauses her drive at the lights.
"fine" i answer, fixing my string of pearls in the view mirror.
"what's his name again?" mother asks as the light turns green.
"duncan. he's a very nice boy" i lie. he's actually quite the opposite, but that's what i like about him. i'm a little surprised actually, i sneak him into the house all the time, how could she know of his presence?
"ah" she hums.
"what?" i turn to her while her brown eyes keep on the road.
"nothing, it's only... i've heard of him-"
"is that good or bad?"
"just, be careful with this one" her hands are still firm on the leather wheel.
"don't get me wrong- i'm sure he's a gentlemen but-""it's fine mum" i cut her off. "nothing's happened" i reassure her with a smile. another lie.
