30 Days Before

It was the day of my leaving party. I told my parents that I didn't want one, and that I didn't need one. But they insisted that they had to do something special before I left.

My parents were so upset about me leaving, but I told them it was for the best. I can't stay here at this awful school with awful memories. I had to start leading a better life. So I decided that this was what I needed. My parents couldn't actually afford this boarding school, but I won a scholarship after taking entry tests.

Ever since my 11 year old sister died, things have never been the same. She was the glue that held the whole family together. She was like an explosion of enthusiasm, she was a bright shining star that brought happiness everywhere she went.

She always wanted the best for others, and she didn't deserve to die. It was all my fault...

"Armin! Your friends are here!" My Mum called. She started fussing around, making sure her hair looked good and smoothing down my shirt. "I'm fine Mum" I protested and swatted her hands away.
As I walked towards the door I was confused at who it could be, as I don't have any friends. I opened the door to see Ellie. The quiet girl with thin brown hair in my history class. She didn't talk much, but sometimes we would sit together at lunch for company. Not talking most of time, but just to have someone there.

"Hi Armin" she said. She was so quiet it was almost a whisper. Before I could reply my Mum stood next to me.
"Hi! Hello! Oh do come in dear, its lovely to have you here" my Mum fussed as she tried to get Ellie inside.
"Oh that's okay. Sorry mrs..."

"Jane, just call me Jane" Mum said quickly.

"Okay, sorry Jane. And Armin. But I only came to give you a leaving present, I have to go"
My Mums face instantly fell.

"So soon?"

"Yes I've been invited to Sarah's party. I have to go now, bye"

Sarah was popular at school. I never had a good experience with her. She always tried to humiliate me and Ellie knew this, so I felt a bit of betrayal . We were never really friends but I thought she of all people would understand.
Suddenly she ran back, and I thought for a second she changed her mind. But instead she placed a parcel in my hand while looking at me apologetically.

"Have a good time, Armin" she waited a moment, and then left. I never saw her again.

"Well that's okay, your other friends are coming" My mum reassured me. I don't think she understood that I literally had no friends. I guess it's hard to believe your son is that much of a loser.

As hours went by it dawned on my parents that no one was coming. We took the party snacks ourselves and ate on the couch. They kept looking at me as if expecting me to cry or something, but I was used to it.

"Guess we should've listened to you about the party" my Dad said into the silence. That's when my Mum started crying, and I held her hand.

"It's okay Mum I'm used to it" but that only made her cry more.

"I'm so sorry Armin. You shouldn't be used to it, you're an incredible boy and don't you ever forget it. I'm going to miss you so much. I love you"

"I love you too" My Dad said.

"I love you guys, I'm going to miss you"

I knew me being gone would make them think about the empty house, and my dead sister. Its like everyone was thinking the same thing and hugged silently.

After the hug I opened the parcel Ellie gave me. And it was called 'The Great Perhaps'. It was about man on a journey to seek a better life. I smiled because she knew I loved this book. Maybe she actually did care a little.

"See" I told my parents, pointing to the cover.

"That's what I'm going to seek. A great perhaps"

A/N: awh poor Armin. What do you think is going to happen at boarding school?
