You weren’t supposed to make eye contact with the guards.
That was one of the unspoken rules.
You weren’t supposed to talk unless spoken to.
You weren’t supposed to step out of line.
And you definitely weren’t supposed to notice them. But she made it hard not to.
She was different. You could tell even behind the red uniform and that sharp, anonymous triangle mask. She moved with intent, like she wasn’t just going through the motions like the others. She stood straighter. Reacted faster. Watched longer.
Watched you.
You told yourself you were imagining it.
But it kept happening.
Every time you looked up from a game or caught your breath during meal time, she was there. Not moving. Not threatening.
Just watching.
Like she was waiting.
Like she saw something in you.
And for some reason?
That didn’t scare you.
---
The first time she stepped out of protocol was during the Honeycomb game.
You cracked your shape clean — barely — and your hands were shaking too hard to even stand.
A guard stepped toward you.
Another player coughed — broke their piece.
A shot rang out.
You fell backward, flinching, eyes clenched—
And someone grabbed your wrist.
Firm. Steady.
When you opened your eyes, she was there. Triangle mask. Silent.
She steadied you on your feet, her gloved hand still gently gripping your wrist.
And just before she let go, she nodded. Once.
You nodded back.
---
You didn’t tell anyone.
How could you?
No one would believe you anyway.
And yet… every day, she was there.
Never speaking. Never touching. Just watching.
You caught glimpses of her behind stairwells, hallways, standing on the edge of the dorm’s entrance.
Once, you mouthed:
“Why me?”
She tilted her head.
Didn’t answer.
