Recently kicked up dust began to settle as Toshirou's hand gripped his zanpakutō's hilt. He was caught off guard when he saw a girl lying in a decently sized crater in the cobblestone. Her wild black hair covered up part of her face and her clothes had been both tattered and dirtied. The strangest thing of all was the black markings that crawled up her body. He felt like he had seen them somewhere before but his mind couldn't pinpoint where.

While he scanned her form, the white-haired boy noticed a crimson liquid trickle down her head. An unwarranted feeling of concern welled up in him. He tried to push it aside but something wouldn't let him. Deciding that it was best to try and wake the Ryoka, he reached out towards her. Once he got close enough, her markings began to glow faintly. He had just enough time to jump back before a large black creature snapped at him.

Not every monster's scary,

"Hey, Ichigo?"

"Yeah, Rukia?"

"Just how did you become friends with Akino-san, anyway?" Rukia tilted her head inquisitively. 

With his face aimed towards the sky, Ichigo spoke quietly, "I've dealt with my fair share of bullies. In junior high, some kids were making fun of me for my hair and every day they'd take my lunch. Sometimes they'd eat it or throw it on the ground right in front of me." 

"One day, after school, I saw this chick holding the head honcho of the group up by his collar. She threw him up against the lockers with the entire school watching. The kid nearly pissed himself he was so scared," Ichigo cracked a smile as he continued. "I didn't even know she had watched him and his friends pick on me for the past week or so but apparently she did. After the teacher got onto her and called her uncle, she walked up told me that we were going to be friends."
