The Lake and The Boy

Classical music played somberly through the halls of Wright's Woods High School. Thunderously,  as if their lives depended on it students streamed out of the rundown classrooms openly celebrating the end of the school day.

"Ouch", Sadie cursed, as her history books tumbled to the floor along with her harry potter esque glasses. She looked behind her irritation flooding her golden brown skin. Before her stood a boy she had never seen in her life that was until her last period history class that afternoon.

He stared at her with his piercing emerald eyes as if trying to unlock her darkest secrets, she turned away feeling uncomfortable, her braids flicking gracefully over her shoulder. When she turned back around he was gone. People bustled past her hurrying for the cream exit doors, accidentally shoving her about, she dropped to the white tiled floors searching for her glasses. She flinched when a hand tapped her plaid clad shoulder, she whipped around her braids hitting her painfully on the face. She looked up at her best friend Blake Crawford and she shot him, a questioning look.

"Here your glasses", he whispered, his blue eyes squinting in the poorly lit halls. She carefully placed her glasses upon her sharp nose. "Thanks", she mumbled, pulling herself up with the help of Blake's hand. She brushed herself off noticing a patch of white dust had settled on her black skinny jeans,  her lips curled into a grateful smile. She ascended into Blake's warm embrace and took in the smell of his overpowering cologne, he handed her her dust covered books and confirmed there plans for the weekend.

She stood in the centre of the hall and trotted to her generous sized locker, she turned the dial and stared at the photos that lined her lockers wall, the photos were of herself and her parents, standing before a drab house, they all looked so happy , having no idea what was to come. Shaking herself free of old memories, she strolled through the now empty halls and out into the blinding sun.

About 17 minutes later, she found herself not heading home but instead heading to her favourite spot to be alone. Her feet dragged along the gravelly path probably cursing her for the extra mile detour, she looked around at the black spindling trees, that had never grown back from the severe fire damage they suffered. She spied the long grasses an indication she was about to reach her destination. In front of her lay a small lake, a lake not quite big enough to bother boating on. The water glistened in the sunlight, reflecting the day's blue cloudy sky.  She trudged to her favourite rock, kicking up gravel into her shoes as she walked. She sat down on the rock, its smooth dusty surface almost definitely ruining her pants. She let her gaze wonder to what sat behind the lake, but quickly forced her gaze away. Though a couple seconds later she found her hazel eyes examining the scene, there behind the lake was a pile of woods and brick covered in black ash. There once stood her family home, though now it was nothing but a skeleton of what it was once. Tears suddenly streamed down her face as remembered the screams of her parents, she tried to wipe them away but they just kept falling.

She owned the land the house once stood on, but she didn't have it in her heart quite yet to remove what remained of her childhood. Her tears slowly stopped pouring, when something she had never seen before caught her eyes. She saw something under the water as the lake was less full then it had ever been before, it looked like something was becoming unlodged from underneath a rock.

Suddenly she heard approaching footsteps and she turned around to the sounds of crunching gravel and the smell of deli meat.

"Oh, I didn't know anyone one else would be here", uttered the mystery boy from her history class. "I thought you just moved here", Sadie remarked bitterly, taking in his tousled auburn hair and tanned skin. "I used to come visit here with my family", he expressed seeming on edge. "Cool", Sadie offered. "Also thanks for just leaving me to pick up everything myself", she spat. "Yeah sorry, that was a jerk move on my part" he muttered, his green eyes glowing. "You think", Sadie rendered, rolling her eyes, "But thanks for apologizing".  His eyes crinkled as a smile swept across his face, as he turned to leave. "Wait, why did you run off like that", she called after him, readjusting her seating on the rock.

"I got distracted", he mumbled clearly flustered. His eyes flicked to his black gold rimmed watch, "Well I best be going ", he stated". "Bye then",  Sadie replied feeling very unaccomplished. He walked away, dragging his feet along the gravel path as he walked.

Sadie felt her gaze wonder to the disturbance she had seen under the lake before she was interrupted, as her eyes narrowed in on it, she gasped to herself, it was bones, actual bones. She looked around her grass filled surroundings checking if anyone was nearby. She glanced up at the sky, realizing it would be dark in around two hours. She kicked off her red boots and socks, and felt her feet get stabbed by the gravel under her toes. She inched towards the water feeling unnerved, even though she had swam in this lake dozens of times before. Though those times the water had seemed clearer and oh yeah wasn't filled with bones. She put her toes into the luke warm water before she could convince herself to chicken out. The water danced in the sunlight as if inviting her to take a swim. She trudged into the water, until all her clothes were sodden and clinging to her, once fully submerged she started swiftly swimming towards the pile of bones. She felt her clothing begin to weigh her down, and she began to get very nervous as she felt her feet kick something curvy and seemingly detached from whatever it was lodged under . She looked down the water suddenly becoming crystal clear, it was a skull. She felt the desire to swim back to the safe lakes edge, but then she realised something, she hadn't needed to take a breath yet and she had been down in the water for at least two minutes.  She started screaming underwater, not that anyone could hear her. She swam down to to pick up the skull, when she noticed another skull a couple inches over, hiding behind a grey rock, she went to pick it up, when something gold and shiny caught her eye. Like a magpie she reached for it, it was a heart shaped locket, engraved with the initials, C, S. She felt her heart speed up to a million miles an hour and she felt her head start to become very light, she shook herself out of it and opened it. Inside was what she most feared it was, it was a picture of her mom and her dad.

Suddenly confusion was the only thing Sadie could feel, "were these skulls here parents"? "But didn't they die in a fire", was all she could think of. Though this skulls definitely weren't charred or burned, not a bit. She ran her fingers delicately over the locket and sobbed, though her tears went unnoticed amidst the water.

Suddenly, she felt herself lifting up and soon she was floating 5ft above the water, and she could see her charred house, part of town and the green grasses familiar to the lake. She started to panic but soon a calm feeling washed over her and assured her that everything was as it was meant to be. She lingered her hands over the lake and curled her hands into balls, and magically the lake started draining, as if someone had just taken out the plug. In a few moments the lakes bottom was fully exposed, and everything had vanished, expect for the dirt that lined the lake and the bones.  She closed her eyes and with a plop was suddenly on the lake's edge lying beside the bones and the lakes water gleamed once more as if nothing had even happened. She stood and noticed that all the gravel and dirt had stuck to her soaked clothes, she bent down to examine the bones, when she could of sworn she heard a wooshing sound.

"I knew it, I knew you were a witch, the first time I smelt you", a male voice proclaimed. Sadie whirled around, her heart racing. Before she could place the voice and see his face, a pair of hands placed themselves around her neck, in a sleep hold. She tried to fight off her attacker with her newly sourced abilities, but all she could muster was to pour water over her clothes. She felt herself slowly fade into unconsciousness and like a light she was out.
