November 5th. The echoing of explosions of light and colour littering the sky in a breath-taking spectacle. Kye remembers a time when he would watch, eye's fixated in the fog-clogged skies as his parents and family watched the ignition, winced at the take-off and gazed in awe at the light and flourish of pigments displayed on the navy canvas, bare ; maybe mixed with the greys of clouds or shimmer of stars.
Yet tonight he doesn't stand with them, or sit next to his loved ones around a blazing bonfire, oranges and yellow sparking a physical and metaphorical warmth that spread throughout him. He isn't alone though. Next to him, a floored Alex watches in disbelief. The man had told Kye earlier that fireworks weren't a thing where he used to live, too desolate and isolated to be worth the time.
Maybe that's why his heart skipped a beat at the wide smile, the look of amazement sent his way many times in a single minute. Maybe two a second, he couldn't tell. The pure pride of watching him enjoy himself after an obviously stressful move was enough to fuel his own grin, genuine and wide- the first one in years. It felt foreign. It felt nice.
It only occurs to him then, stood, not paying much attention to the loud bangs or immense and glittering fulgurations, rather at his newly acquired..... He wasn't sure what they were. Were they neighbours? Acquaintances? Friends? Kye didn't know. What was clear, however, was the way they had clicked over the past few days.
Alex had moved in on Halloween , intending to say hi and go, yet it turned into a night of laughs and getting to know each other better. Of a ridiculous amount of sweets and general sugar. Yet that's why he stands, happy to endure the cold, by Alex's side.
The man was warmth and comfort in a singular being. An enigma of sorts. He came out of nowhere, no apparent or troubled past. No adventurous story of twisting paths and a target painted in obvious colours on his back. He was a person, lost and alone, traversing the ever complicated course of life. Perhaps that was what made Alex so appealing. He contrasted Kye in many way's.
Kye carried a permanent cold, never thawed, never frozen more. He was already freezing. Snow was scared of him. His backstory was similar to a fairy-tale mixed with gothic horror. Happy and carefree till the death of his family, growing dark and a putrid crimson that he tried to fight, yet it seeped through.
Maybe that's why he stands, just the two of them, in a contempt and comfortable silence. Maybe, because Alex is there, his world brightens slightly, his constant frost thawed ever so slightly.
His world may never be fully coloured again. Maybe it would never regain the warmth and happiness it once contained.
Yet maybe it would. Maybe the fireworks (or Alex) would bring a new palate to his life. Maybe their friendship (pinning turning love) would melt the barrier of ice protecting him from grief, revert the cruel punishment of time. Maybe reverse the loss and the hurt and the fading.
Because he was fading, blurring into the melancholy world that surrounds him. Join so many others on the fall to void. To nothingness. To being another victim to the mockery of universes, of space of time.
Maybe Alex would pull him back, halt his descent, return the happy and carefree personality he had lost those years ago.
Maybe, just maybe, they would live and learn together. Stick together through the good and bad.
Maybe, as they say, they will be together till death do them part.
Then, if the godly figures have mercy, reunite after their candles flicker out, after they are plunged into a painless yet suffocating dark. Find each other in the lifeless after life. Find each other among the old and the young. The dead and alive.
They would find each other.
They always do.
No matter timeline.
No matter life.
They are magnets, north and south.
Drawn by fate and fate alone.
