“Aaah!” I screamed as Sadako’s face flashed at the screen. Realizing how stupid I looked, I threw my throw pillow at the TV.
“Stupid horror movie…” I muttered as I stared at the credits rolling through the screen. It was a little after 10 o’clock. My parents were on a business trip that instantaneously meant I had the whole house to myself for a week.
So, to celebrate my first day of freedom, I had decided to stay up late watching movies. While waiting for the next movie to present itself, I absentmindedly stared at the window across my view. It was raining again. This is the fourth storm of the month and it’s only the second week!
Thinking of the rain made me suddenly conscious of the decreasing temperature of the room. Getting off the warm comfortable sofa, I decided to trek to the kitchen to make myself some hot cocoa.
I left the TV on so I could hear a little noise in this extremely quite house. The horror movie I just watched as well as the silence of the house made me suddenly scared of my own home. Lightning angrily flashed and thunders roared outside the walls and I could hear the wind howling loudly blowing the trees beside our house back and forth.
Before I knew it, I had started singing a song to myself. It was a habit I had developed whenever I was alone and scared. It helped ease my nerves.
Now, I was at the kitchen. I switched the lights on and went straight to the cupboards. I started to mix the hot cocoa but I needed to wait for the water to heat up. I was now reaching the chorus of Titanium by David Guetta and I was quite proud of how I belted the notes.
You shoot me down… but I won’t fall… I am titanium…

KNOCK! KNOCK! KNOCK!
I jumped a bit and almost dropped the kettle I was holding. “I was getting at the good part!!!” I screamed/whined more to myself than to the person on the other side of the door. Begrudgingly, I walked back towards the direction of the living room where I had been watching TV.
KNOCK! KNOCK! KNOCK!
“Coming! I’m coming!!” I yelled while speeding up my pace. When I had reached the door, a sudden chill went through my spine. It was unexplainable so I decided to ignore it. It was probably just the storm, after all.
Cautiously, I peered through the peephole. My pupils dilated by what I saw. Urgently, I opened the door and ushered the person inside my warm home and away from the freezing storm.
“WHAT ARE YOU DOING HERE?!” I screamed at my best friend. He was shivering and drenched from head to toe. His teeth were clattering so much that I had to run to the family closet and get a towel and comforter for him as fast as I could.
“Here. Dry yourself…” I told him and then continued, “I’ll make us some hot cocoa.” At those words, I led myself back to the kitchen and continued what I was doing before I got rudely interrupted.
Within five minutes, I was done with the hot cocoa. Now, I was making my way back to the living room. I find the TV showing another horror movie and my best friend staring intensely at the screen.
“Here, you go. Now… what were you doing outside in that weather?! You know that a storm was coming.” I told him with worry. He could’ve died of hypothermia or pneumonia if he didn’t get here on time.
“I just wanted to visit you…” he started. Blood rushed to my face but he continued his statement, “I heard that your parents were away, so I brought… some… movies?” he said while digging through his bag for the DVDs. Unfortunately, they were drenched by the rain water, so they were pretty much useless and broken beyond repair.
