I don't have a cover yet, I'm seriously against using someone else's work for covers straight off of Google--such an asshole move. there is no credit to be able to give. AAND this is going to take.....FOREVER for me to update. I'm awful with updating and stuff like this.

Meloni grunted and her Back ached. The fur shawl was useless against the harsh winds. It had been unusually long since her brother and father had been out hunting. Usually it was common for her to come along and help spot the animals and transport the meat or fillet right there for an easy travel home. But, with the newest child just born and the mother dead, it was difficult to keep Kila, the child, calm. There was an uneasy shiver while the winds blew, a restless yearning the earth seemed to call for blood. Instantly Meloni darted up and went straight into the cave where Kila was resting. She slowly picked the child up, soothed it back to sleep, and sat. Her eyes stared intently to the outer of the cave, the flame flickering and reflecting off of her dark brown eyes. After a long while of staring intently into the mouth of the cave she nodded, fighting the urge to sleep. But all effort failed and while clutching Kila to her bosom she nodded off to sleep.

Snap. Meloni jumped awake, ears twitching to the noise. Eyes darting everywhere to the mouth of the cave and nervously condemning herself for even letting the fire go so low. Her mother would have never let this happen. The raw pain of the recent loss throbbed and pinched with the impending fear dangling over her. Still holding Kila, she struggled up and made her way to fix the potentially costly error. She reached over to grab the torch and start to prepare the fire when all of sudden a fighting hand grabbed her wrist. She let out a piercing scream and instantly went for the small crude stone that had been sharpened. Within a flash she reached for the neck of the individual who held her hand and kept the sharp weapon to the stranger's neck.

"Peace!" the man shouted. Quickly letting go of Meloni's wrist and raising them in surrender. Meloni didn't lower her weapon. She gave a fierce stare at the man. His wide brown eyes stared straight back into hers. She gestured to the mouth of the cave with her chin. The man seemly had gotten the message and slowly backed away. Meloni followed keeping the sharp blade at the neck. "I just was looking for some warmth, I had been traveling for so long."

"What makes you think you can walk into another's hearth?" Meloni grunted furiously. Her fear subsiding and irritation increasing.

"I don't know, like I said. Long time since I've seen another individual" he shrugged, seemingly gaining confidence that irritated Meloni further. "My name is Keryo, northern-over the river was where my village resided."

"Over the river? You should leave this instant!" Meloni gaped. Lowering her blade. Kila started to whimper now the tension from Meloni's shoulders seemed to fade slowly. "Shh. Shh babe. The others will be back with food soon" she soothed the child. She started to sway back to the cave but first flashed a look to warn Keryo to not come closer to the cave.

"Why are you alone? Where are your people? Is that your child? Who are the others you speak of?" Keryo rambled on, seemingly excited with some company. Meloni flashed a disgusted look towards him. Pointedly ignoring him. The sun hid behind gray winter clouds and the wind howled. Meloni tried to ignore Keryo's shivering but failed to. Finally she grunted.

"What are you doing shivering in the wind? Come and make yourself useful, make a fire to warm us up." Meloni spoke harshly but the kind act was not lost on Keryo. He beamed with happiness and scattered to gather for the fire. Meloni couldn't help but let a faint smile escape her harsh exterior.

Several moons ahead, Meloni held Kila in her arms and sat near the fire. Keryo sat across facing her. His eager looks seemed to hint to the fact that he so desperately wanted information about Meloni. Meloni was nervous and fidgety under his constant gaze. She wished her father and brothers were home. The lively bunch would have sated Keryo's need for communication. She was stiff and the constant prodding Keryo's eyes seemed to do was infuriating. Meloni recalled the time her father teased her saying that, she was a hard stone on the outside, but crack her open and she was the finest mud that seemed to do nothing but be gentle.
