Alery flounced her way over to the door, ready to go. She grabbed hold of her mother's hand trying with all her might to get her to move faster. Alery loved to go to the park and today was no exception.
Alery's mother, Jennifer, smiled down at her daughter. She looked so cute with her little sundress and pigtails. Today, they were going to the park so that she could meet up with an old friend whom she hadn't seen in years. Her friend was human but that didn't bother Jennifer. She was never one to discriminate.
Once the duo made it to the car, Jennifer strapped the five year old into her car seat. Alery giggled and laughed the entire ride to the park. Her mother could only smile at her child's antics.
As soon as they reached the park, and she was unbuckled, Alery took off for the sandbox. The day was clear, the sun shining brightly. The park had a few kids, none in her favorite spot though, the sandbox tucked beside the climbing wall. She smiled at the beauty of the sun's rays kissing the park and its residents like an intimate lover.
She heard her mother call out for her so she turned. Jennifer sat by another woman, speaking animatedly. Figuring her mommy said something along the lines of, "Be safe," Alery turned back to face forward.
In the midst of her running blindly, she didn't see the tree root that stuck out before her. The little girl fell to the ground scraping her knees and hands in the process. Pain seared throughout her small body and she was about to cry as she rolled over.
The tears were rapidly building when there was a shadow above her. Thinking it was her mommy, she looked up ready to explain what happened. Instead, she found a boy who appeared to be around her age standing before her.
He was looking down at her, concern written across his features. She was about to ask what he was doing when he spoke for her.
"Are you ok?" he asked.
Alery shook her head, a small tear slipping down her face. She sniffled as the boy knelt down beside her. He grabbed her hands and kissed her palms the same way her mommy would. Then he bent down some and did the same to her knees. The whole time, both of them felt electric tingles where they touched.
"There, does that feel better?" he asked.
She nodded her little head, pigtails bobbing. It was really nice of him to kiss her booboos the way her mommy does. Then, a thought crossed her mind.
"Do you have cooties?" she exclaimed.
His brow furrowed in confusion.
"I thought girls have cooties?" he asked, head tilting to the side.
Alery scrunched up her nose and shook her head. It was odd of this boy to accuse her of having cooties.
"I don't have cooties," Alery proudly proclaimed.
"Well I don't either!" cried the boy indignantly.
How strange, they both thought. Their young minds dismissed the thought. The boy stood up and offered his hands to Alery. She gladly accepted them, ready to get some band aids for her booboos.
As soon as their hands met, it was instant tingles again. Alery looked into this boy's eyes and something clicked. Mate, screamed her mind.
"You're my mate," said the boy.
All Alery could do was nod in agreement. A huge smile was plastered on her face and she watched as a smile spread across his face.
"What's your name?" she asked.
"Kadin, yours?" he asked.
"I'm Alery and I'm five," she stated.
Kadin smiled at his newly found mate. She was too cute he couldn't help but think. Not only that, but he would do anything to keep her safe. Kadin was somewhat confused by these thoughts but accepted them none the less.
"I'm seven," he said.
Alery nodded, liking the fact that she found her mate. Her mommy always told her that one day, she would find someone special who would be there forever. Being the smart five year old that she is, Alery knew her mommy was talking about Kadin.
"Well, come on. We need to go find my mommy," Alery said.
Nodding, Kadin followed behind Alery, scouting the area for any threats. Some other boys were looking their way but they didn't look like they would approach. Kadin shot them a look just in case, though.
Once they reached her mom, Alery let go of Kadin's hand. Her mommy's friend was gone now, it seemed. She showed her mommy her wounds and her mom immediately pulled a first aid kit out of her purse. She cleaned the scrapes and applied some band aids.
When Jennifer finished, she noticed the boy who stood behind Alery. He looked a little older than her, maybe a year or two.
"Who's this, sweetie?" Jennifer asked her daughter.
"This is Kadin! He's my mate, mommy," her daughter said happily.
Jennifer's eyes widened and she smiled. Looking back to the boy, she saw that he would be perfect for her daughter. Already, he was showing signs of being protective as he glanced around the park with a scrutinizing eye.
"Where's your mommy, Kadin?" Jennifer asked.
Kadin motioned over to a woman who sat alone on a bench near the edge of the park. The woman was looking their way and Jennifer waved at her. Motioning for the kids to go play, she walked over to Kadin's mom.
She sat down beside the woman, noticing her son looked a lot like her with their dark hair, tan complexion, and piercing green eyes.
"Hi, I'm Jennifer," she introduced.
"I'm Samantha. You can call me Sam," the woman replied.
"Well Sam, our kids told me something interesting just a second ago. They're mates."
Jennifer looked at Sam as her facial features turned sad. Confused, her brows scrunched together.
"I was afraid you'd say that. You see, we were going to leave today. I wanted to get away from this town, but Kadin insisted that we come here one last time. This is his favorite place, after all."
Jennifer nodded sadly at Sam. I wonder what she's leaving behind, Jennifer thought. She watched as Sam stood up, looking at their children who were playing in the sandbox.
It appeared as though Kadin was building a castle for Alery as she clapped happily. The two looked so adorable together that Sam couldn't bear to tear them apart. She took a deep breath, making up her mind. She turned to face Jennifer who was still sitting down.
Sam was amazed at how similar she looked to her daughter. They had the same chestnut hair, medium skin, facial features, and hazel eyes. Jennifer looked like a kind and caring mother so that made her decision easier.
"I have to leave. Really, I do. I can't bring Kadin, though. He belongs here with your daughter and I can't take him away from her. Please promise me you'll take care of him," Sam said.
Jennifer stood up, confused even further by Sam's words. Surely she couldn't mean that she was leaving her son?
"Excuse me?" Jennifer asked.
"I'm going to leave my son with you. Take care of him, love him, and make sure he knows that I love him. That's all I ask," Sam pleaded.
"I don't know if I can..." Jennifer trailed off.
This was too much for Sam to ask of her. Of course, she would take Kadin in and raise him as her own. What she didn't understand was how Sam could just leave her boy like that.
"You can and you will," Sam said, authority ringing in her voice.
Jennifer took a step back, surprised by the command in Sam's voice. The way she said it, it was as though Sam were Alpha Female. That can't be though. A Luna would never leave her pack and her son like this.
Jennifer watched in shock as Sam walked away, climbing into her car and driving off. She turned to face the sandbox again. Kadin had a smile stretched across his face as he watched Alery decorate her newly built castle. Alery would be thrilled to find out Kadin would be coming to live with them. She couldn't help but to think that the same might not be true for Kadin.
