You were known for three things in the games:

1. Having a mouth that didn’t know when to shut up.

2. Somehow not being dead yet.

3. Absolutely cooking Jang Deok-su every time he opened his mouth.

“Keep talkin’, I’ll break your face,” Deok-su growled one day during lunch.

You didn’t even flinch. “With what? That weak-ass prison yard haircut? Please, you look like a GTA character that hasn’t rendered properly.”

Someone spit out their food laughing.

Even the guards looked like they twitched.

One of them — a Square, high-ranked — paused while walking by. His head tilted ever so slightly in your direction.

You caught it.

He was listening.

You smiled.

You performed.

---

Later that day, you were lined up for roll call when Deok-su stomped past you, bumping your shoulder.

“Watch it, trash,” he snarled.

“Calm down, Costco Vin Diesel,” you snapped. “Ain’t nobody impressed by your steroid rage and Play-Doh tattoos.”

That was when it happened.

The Square Guard — the same one — let out a sound.

It wasn’t loud. But it was real.

He snorted.

Behind the mask.

Right in the middle of an execution-level situation.

You whipped your head around, grinning.

“Oh my god. Did I just make you laugh?”

He stiffened.

“I don’t laugh,” he said flatly, mask unreadable.

You raised an eyebrow. “Mmm, I dunno. That sounded suspiciously like a ‘this chick’s hilarious’ moment.”

“Get back in line.”

But you could tell.

He was trying so hard not to react.

And it only made you want to mess with him more.

---

It became a game after that.

Every time he was near, you turned up the sarcasm.

“You ever get tired of standing all stoic and mysterious?” you asked once. “Bet under that mask you’re making finger guns and winking.”

“I don’t wink,” he said.

“So you do have eyes under there. Good to know.”

Another time, you caught him watching you during the cookie game.

You deliberately chose the star, bit the point off immediately, and whispered, “Bet you like a girl who takes risks.”

He choked on air.

You heard it.

Behind the mask.

You winked. “Thought so.”

---

Eventually, he cornered you.

Not threateningly. Just… close.

Close enough that your breath hitched.

“You need to stop drawing attention to me,” he murmured.

You blinked up at him, smirking. “So I was right. You’ve been watching.”

His jaw ticked beneath the mask. “You’re reckless.”

“I’m alive.”

“You’re distracting.”

“You’re blushing.”

He stilled.

You stepped closer, just enough for your fingers to brush the front of his uniform.

“You’ve got a laugh like a villain with a redemption arc,” you whispered, voice low. “And I think I like that.”

He stared at you.

Then, finally, finally, he chuckled.

Just once.

Low. Deep. Real.

And holy hell, it was worth everything.

“You’re going to get us both killed,” he muttered.

You leaned in. “Maybe. But at least we’ll go out laughing.”
