There was nothing better than the short-lived euphoria felt when the final bell rang. The euphoria that was soon canceled out by the rushing thoughts of what she had to deal with for the rest of the day, and the day after, and the day after that...
Waving bye to her friends who left through the back gate, she made her way over to the taxi. It was much darker than normal that day, even with winter approaching so soon. The sun lay on the horizon, past the lined-up cars and wandering students waiting for their parents to pick them up.
Sky slid open the door and hopped into her seat by the window in the back. She peered out, watching to see if anyone she knew would pass by the tinted glass, but alas it was simply just the normal mix of rambunctious year sevens and the dead, tired eyes of everyone older than 12. Of course, there'd occasionally be a handful of kids standing too close to the side of the road, pushing each other further and further from the pavement until a car approached.
Once loaded entirely with the students who rode with them for today, the taxi pulled out of the parking lot, muddling through the small hordes of children walking by. It rolled right down the street congested with traffic going in, but easily passed by the cars making haste to leave.
There was Mara, leaning against the wire fence-- zoning out per usual, waiting for her mom to pick her up.
There was Diego and Ashley, headed home; the former with his bag strung over one shoulder, the latter fitted in a puffy coat that failed to make up for their height.
And then they were gone on the pavement of the road behind her. And then there was no pavement next to the road behind her. Just meters after meters of asphalt, being tread on by her taxi and many others.
