I stared at my reflection in the mirror. Black Louboutins, a low-cut black cocktail dress, the same three bracelets I never took off, and my small black bag over my shoulder, containing my phone, bank card, and kindle, because I sure as hell wasn't going there to socialise.

I got in my car, fixed my lipstick, and drove to the pub my old bosses had rented for their annual party.

The second I pulled up outside, I wanted to turn back. People were making out, fighting and drinking. Taking a deep breath, I opened my car door and stepped out into the crisp winter air.

As I walked into the pub, I was met with loud music, flashing lights, and the strong smell of alcohol and smoke. Avoiding everyone, I scanned the room, looking for a certain woman. After five minutes of looking, my gaze fell on her.

A flowy knee-length lilac dress, with creme belt around her waist, baby pink heels and her hair loosely curled and falling just above her hips. In her hands, sat a book and next to her, stood a drink.

"Good evening, Ms Venable," I smiled, as I sat down next to her at the bar.

She didn't even look up from her book. Now I could see her, I noticed her face was heavily made up, and she had ditched her glasses, making her eyes more prominent.

"Why are you here?" She frowned, still looking at her book.

"Attendance is mandatory," I repeated my boss's earlier words.

"Oh for fuck's sake y/n! I made it up!" She yelled, slamming her book shut and looking at me.

She looked me over a few times in silence, before her gaze met mine.

"You look nice," she said, barely above a whisper.

"Thank you, so do you," I smiled, making her turn away again.

"You left work early," she said, sounding a little hurt.

"You weren't there for me to talk to you," I fought back.

"And why was that an issue?"

"I got lonely," I sighed.

"You lied to me," she whispered, looking down.

"When?" I frowned.

"You said I was gorgeous," I lifted her face, to see tears in her eyes.

"I never lied to you," I whispered, smiling softly and wiping her tears.

And then she kissed me.
