"Check Mate." I grimly uttered to Jason.
"Oh Darn It, Shawn! I thought I was doing so well!" Jason responded with sorrow because he'd just lost for the 12th time in his favorite game, Chess.
I don't really mind spending time with Jason, I know we don't have long together. He's an energetic, lovable 7-year-old, and I'm an indignant 14-year-old. My birthday is tomorrow and after the age 15 at the Boys Home, your chances for adoption are pretty much lost. The Warden walked in and told us we had possible adopters coming, so we needed to freshen up. I helped Jason prepare for what could be the most important day of his adolescent life. I didn't even try, I mean what are the chances I'd be chosen over any of these kids.
The slender figure walked into the Mess Hall. All the boys were lined up. Jason stood right in front of me, I had my arms around him and held him tight for comfort. I'm just not sure if the comfort was for my sake or his. The cloaked man stood at about a 7-foot stature, and wore dark aviator sunglasses. He walked down the line and observed each boy as if searching for a certain quality. He stopped in his tracks, when he came upon Jason and I. My grip on Jason tightened, and I began to sweat. He grinned and moved his glasses down. His eyes were penetrating, and horrifying to look at. I could tell that he had evil intentions and was not ready to let him pursue them.
He slowly knelled down to our level and spoke, "You don't know how long I've been looking for you."
The Warden walked over eager to join the conversation, "So, are you interested in adopting Jason and Shawn?"
He turned to the Warden, "I require the Prince!"
He then lifted his hand towards her and it happened so fast. The Warden was forced towards the wall on the other side of the hall. Everyone was in shock and a moment later panic insued. All the boys began running around in a frenzy. I grabbed Jason in my arms and headed for the exit. I could hear the sound of the man plowing through the children in search of us. He finally spotted us.
"STOP! YOU CAN'T ESCAPE!"
I continued to run and didn't look back. I promised myself that I'd never let anyone hurt Jason. And today was not the day I intended on breaking that promise. I could feel the man gaining, I didn't know what to do. I knew there's no chance we could escape. I had to do something, so I stopped. We can't escape. I threw myself over Jason and anticipated the on-coming pain. There was nothing. I felt nothing.
A few moments passed and nothing was happening. I turned towards the direction the man was and he was no longer chasing us. He looked confused like he was looking for something. The room was now empty and he angrily searched the room. 'Was he looking for us?' I thought. We were in plain sight. Or were we? He was looking right at us and yet I don't think he was. I didn't know what to think. I looked back at Jason to see if he was okay. He wasn't, he was gone. Although he was still there. I mean, I could still feel him. At this point, I was terrified. I looked at myself and stopped in amazement. I was invisible. How is this even possible? The man still searched for us, while Jason and I snuck out the backdoor.
We began to run down Elm Street headed for, anywhere but there. We started to gain visibility and speed. The image of the Warden flying against the wall burned in my brain. I gripped Jason's hand and began to move faster. What just happened? The Warden flying against the wall. The fact that I some how became invisible. It was like magic.
