Chapter 5 We Can't take in Every Stray

After I finish bandaging the wound, I give her privacy to change from the bloody tank to Luke's t-shirt, joining the others in the living room.

“How is she?” Luke whispers.

“Physically, she'll heal. Emotionally, she's obviously distressed by what happened. I think she proved herself a fighter though and will be okay.”

I look at her three rescuers. “You did good helping her. She would have been raped and dead by now,” I bluntly tell them.

They become solemn and nod.

“Did you find out why she keeps wiping at her mouth?” North asks.

“He forced his on her and she couldn't get the feel of him off.”

I can hear North's teeth grind. “We should have killed him.”

“It's over now,” I say. “She was the priority.”

I get Owen's attention. “She has no one Owen.”

His face is void of emotion. “What are you saying?”

“Her family abandoned her six months ago. From what I can gather, she has no one to go to for help. She's still seventeen and alone in a world that may be going to hell for who knows how long. I can't turn my back on her.”

I take a breath. “I think she should stay with us.”

“And what if we have to go? It'll be a rough and dangerous journey.”

“If things continue like this, she won't make it,” I say. “I'll be responsible for her, take care of her.”
