I've seen all of the other tributes dressed up in chariots, but I haven't actually seen them like this. Just normal. They all look older than me. Besides the girl for district eleven. She looks my age. The rest are at least above age fifteen.
I decide for the first part of training to observe the other tributes, to see what there strengths are. And to see what I can use against them.
The girl and boy from district one both can only throw spears. The girl and boy from district two can use all weapons, besides the bow and arrows. The girl and boy from district three can't do anything and aren't apart of the career pack. However, the girl from district four is apart of the pack and can throw a trident from long distances. The rest of the tributes can't do anything until you get to district eleven. The boy can throw an axe really well for some reason. I thought they didn't even have weapons in district eleven. The girl who's my age can run and dodge things very quickly, she can also climb trees.
I'm over at a station with rope tying a bracelet together. I would practice throwing the cool Capitol knives, but dad told me to save it for the arena. I hear the careers laughing. I look over and they're laughing at me.
"How pathetic. The daughter of the star crossed lovers can't even fight!" One says. They all burst out laughing.
This angers me. I through the rope I was tying down and head towards the knife station. I pic up the knives and a voice says, "Start." So I do just that. These yellow pixelated figures run around throwing fake weapons at me. I hit one with a knife and it bursts into pieces. I do all of this very fast, throwing multiple knives at a time. By this point everyone is watching me now. The voice finally says, "Stop." I put the knives down and go back to rope tying. Everyone was stunned. I glare at the career pack as I walk away, they looked very impressed. Then they huddled and started whispering.
"Hey, Phoenix!" River yells walking towards me. "That was impressive! Want to be allies?"
Considering it I say, "Yeah sure fire boy."
We both spend the rest of our time in the one day of training we have studying all bad and good plants and basically anything edible.
At the end of training mom and dad come to retrieve us. We walk into the elevator in silence. Once we get in the elevator dad breaks it. "Why did you not listen to us?" I didn't realize that question was aimed at me until I saw his eyes looking in my direction.
"I'm sorry. They just angered me and I didn't want to be considered weak."
"That's no excuse Sage. Now you're probably their biggest target!" His voice is getting angrier, just like it was when he was screaming at mom during one of his episodes.
"Look we both no I'm not getting out of this so why does it even matter?!" Right after say this the elevator opens and I dart for my room. I shut the door behind me. I then go to the bed and slide under the sheets. I've never heard my dad get so mad before. Seconds after I curl up under the covers, tears pour out of my eyes. I should have been nicer. After all these are my last days with him anyway.
Minutes go by, maybe even an hour I finally hear a knock at the door. I don't answer. I want to be alone. Of coarse it's dad who comes in anyways. He sits down on the bed.
"Willow I'm sorry, I just was concerned about you. I shouldn't have gotten mad at you. I love you." I rise and hug him.
I whisper to him, "I don't want to go."
"I'm sorry this is all my fault. I put you in danger for my bad decision. I promise we'll send you things to your advantage okay? I'm so sorry Sage, I'm so sorry. Do you have any allies?"
"Yeah. River and I are working as a team."
"Just don't make the same mistake we did."
