My Arrogant Neighbor
I walked into the entrance of the building and was immediately greeted by an older lady who was shorter than me and had her frizzy hair pinned up into a messy bun.
She didn’t seem to fit in as she was wearing a knee length skirt and frumpy cardigan but she seemed content. The smile on her face didn’t falter as she greeted me.
“Ms. Simmons, welcome to Beauty Magazine. I’m your new assistant Arlene Donnelly but you can call me Arlene.”
Arlene turned around and led me to the elevators across the lobby. I trailed behind her and gazed around at the vast entrance. Two glass chandeliers hung from the ceiling and illuminated the whole room, not to mention the sunlight outside since all the walls were glass windows from top to bottom.
Arlene had been saying something to me but I hadn’t been paying attention. Whenever she looked back at me, I simply nodded my head and softly smiled.
One thing I had noticed on the ride up was that our head office was on the very top floor.
“Mrs. Grey wants to meet with you first before I show you your office.”
Mrs. Grey was the most expensive and important woman in fashion magazine history as of right now. I brushed up on the details of her on the drive to New York. I had to do something to drown out Ana’s endless bickering of bad drivers and the latest gossip.
Mrs. Grey as of right now is the biggest fashion icon, owning sixty two branches of magazine corporations, three of which are in Russia, and being able to produce any fashion trend right out of her designer coat pocket.
The elevator ride seemed to drag. Arlene had stopped talking leaving us in silence. I guess she felt the seriousness of Mrs. Grey before she even saw her. When the doors opened, I stepped out onto the floor to see people moving in opposite directions of each other.
Some of them had clothing racks, some had dry cleaned clothes, and some had piles and piles of papers jumbled in their hands. Something I noticed about everyone though was that they were all dressed to perfection.
Not a single hair was out of place on them or on their clothing and they seemed to walk highly, almost as if they knew people were watching and they had a show to put on. The only person who seemed to stand out was Arlene.
I could feel her directly behind me and to my left. I went to ask her where Mrs. Grey’s office was when someone had run into me, knocking me to the ground. Whoever they were, they had a lot of papers they were holding because I looked up to see hundreds of white sheets of paper flying in the air before settling on the ground.
“ShÏt, she’s going to kill me,” a girl in a black jumpsuit slammed her hands against her thighs before rushing to pick up all the papers she dropped. Arlene dropped quickly and fumbled to grab all the papers at once.
