Keep your head down.
Don't make friends.
Stay alone.

I repeated these rules as I walked down the halls of the Trent Middle School. I don't know what to say about it other than it's like a prison. No people, no food, no bathrooms. I look around at all the kids on phones, robots for their unseen master. I ducked my head and rolled my brown-gold eyes. The kids now only had red or yellow eyes, meaning they are immersed in their tech. I duck my head even lower. I ran to the French class. Before I made it I hit something and it fell over. I look up, it was a someone.

" Omph!"

He fell over. I look at him, his eyes are blue. He's been fighting the technology!

"Sorry!"

It was a test. If you lived in the tech, you couldn't hear me.

"It's alright."

I gasped. "You can hear me!!" We said together. I knew what needed to happen so I whispered,

"Bleachers. 7:00." He nodded and we separated. Another member to a club of one.

——————Later under the bleachers——————-

Lucas ducked under the bleachers at 7:11.

"Wow. Fashionably late I see." I raised my eyebrows.

He laughed and blew a kiss. "You know it!"

We both laugh till our sides hurt. I don't remember the last time I laughed.

Once we got over it, we sat down on a yoga mat I brought from a boarded up studio. We talked then I realized he was smart. It wasn't fair that this should have happened to him, he would have been an A+ student. I must've made a face because Lucas panicked.

"Did I say something wrong! I'm sorry!!"

"No no I was just thinking... do you want to work together?"

His eyes lit up, when the flame went out. "They can track us though."

"Let me remove your chip."

He flinched. "It would mess up my hair."

I felt my mouth fall open. "What!?" He snorted. "Ally! I'm kidding!"

I was in tears I was laughing so hard. I leaned against when my laughter died. "Are you ready?"

He grinned. "Will you tell me why They can't track you?"

"After."

"Then yes" his smile was so sweet. "I don't know if this will hurt or not so be ready."

He looked worried, but he met my eyes and whispered, "I trust you."

I pulled a device from my pocket and placed where the chip was. I pulled and snapped the chip in two.

Lucas screamed. I screamed, "Lucas I'm so so so so sorry!!"

He smiled sadly, the took my hand. "Sorry I scared you. It was a rush of sparks that felt like daggers."

I was crying. I hurt him, and he was my friend. The word was strange and yet pleasing. Friend.

"Are we friends?" "Of course. I will keep you safe if you let me work with you."

"Of course Lucas." "I'll keep you safe."

"Wanna Bet!?" It was the WATCHER's.
