People told you that this is the time that life speeds up. You always gave them the same bored look, nodding with a sarcastic grin. You were pretending to listen, but what you were really thinking about is what book to read next. You didn’t really care if these years would fly by. At school, people would ask you “Where do you see yourself in five years’ time?” You never cared much about planning the future. Things would always get in the way of plans, so yet with another bored expression on your face you said, “I’ll still be working out who I am, let alone where I’ll be!”
Although, I have never wished to go back to being your age, there are a few things I miss about you, things that as you get older you realise that they need to change, like seeing the good in everyone, seeing the world in rose tinted glasses. That and a couple of others. But I do wish you had done a few things differently too.
I wish you had tried harder, so it gave you more options in the future, I wish you hadn’t been so hard on your family. They all love and cherish you. Whatever you choose they’ll always be behind you and support you.
The main thing that made me proud of you is the way you never tried to fit in once, or be someone you’re not. You were happy to go to school with no makeup, your hair shoved into a messy bun. If you went the whole day not having spoken to someone, you didn’t care. It meant you had more time to daydream about the characters in the book.
So thank you for being you and only you. Not five different personalities in one person.
