ASSASSINS
The Police Inspector stopped the car close to the council building and waited. He glanced ahead as if staring at nothing, thinking of nothing. He didn't know why he was here. He just knew that he had to be here. He needed to be here. The Inspector turned to the building as he saw the doors open and several people emerged. One of the faces stood out among the others and immediately he knew what he had to do; why he had come here.
He reached into the glove compartment of the Vauxhall Insignia and took out handgun. Where the gun had come from he couldn't remember. He just knew it was there. He opened the car door and stepped out, walking towards the people on the council building steps. He then aimed the gun at the face he had recognised and fired without even thinking. The bullet hit the councillor squarely in the chest.
The people around the building began to scream, scattering in all directions. Others tried to help the councillor who had just been shot. But the Police Inspector fired the gun a second time, this time hitting the councillor in the head, killing him instantly.
Security guards and nearby Police rushed to the Police Inspector as he dropped the gun. He didn't resist. He had done his job. There was no need to run.
Cai placed the letter in the envelope and sealed it, placing in in front of the old clock above the open fire. He turned to his baby daughter and glanced down at her sleeping form in the cot.
It was going to take some time to get used to being a single father to her. Cai wasn't going away forever. Just for a little while. He'd come back when he was ready. Cai couldn't abandon Sequorah. He loved her too much. He just needed some time to think things through.
"Trinity, stay here," Cai told the German Shepherd. Trinity wagged his tail and watched Cai pick up the keys to the new Land Rover that Jack had bought for them to use. This Land Rover was one of a kind, Jack having the Land Rover remade with extra components added for their use and with improved driving ability that no other Land Rover had.
Cai also picked up a rucksack and left his room, leaving the door slightly ajar so Trinity could get out if he needed to. He passed Nick and Dael's room without glancing back. Nick would understand. He hoped. But would Jack? And Dael and Lily? Somehow he knew Lily would understand but wasn't so sure about Dael. Right now he didn't care what Jack thought. He just wanted a break from all this. Time to think. Jack would accuse Cai of giving up when things started to become rough. Cai had done that a few times when he was younger. But that wasn't what he was doing. Not this time.
It was still dark outside, but Cai could see the sun just beginning to make an appearance on the horizon. In a matter of minutes, it would be light, and Cai wanted to be away from here before then because Garion might see him leave since the Marubi was such an early riser.
Cai unlocked the Land Rover, threw his rucksack on the back seat, and climbed inside. The engine turned over first time and Cai drove off the grounds to anywhere but here.
As Dael left the bedroom she heard Sequorah crying. Cai was probably getting a bottle ready. Maybe he needed a hand, even though he was very good with her. He was learning new stuff all the time.
Dael left Nick sleeping and walked the short distance to Cai's room where he had moved from the large room on the top floor two weeks before so he could be closer to the others should he need a hand with his new daughter. Dael's own baby was due in four months and helping Cai with his own baby was also giving her some practice.
As Dael approached Cai's room she found the door slight ajar. "Cai?" Dael called as she pushed the door open and stepped inside. Trinity stood as he saw her. Cai was nowhere to be see. He wasn't even in the bathroom. Dael stepped over to the cot and leaned in. "I bet you're hungry and need a nappy change." Dael bent down to pick Sequorah up, then saw the envelope in front of the clock. She put Sequorah back in her cot and picked up the envelope, opening it.
