Chapter Sixteen:

"Snake. Snake, get up."

I groaned and rolled over. I allowed myself to get shook a couple more times before opening my eyes. Sophi was kneeling beside the bed, worry written across her face.

"Sophi, what's wrong?" I asked, sitting up.

"There are police here. They want to talk to us," she said. There was panic in her voice.

I swung my feet over the side of the bed and stood up.

"Stay in here and try to relax. I'll talk to them."

She nodded. I headed out into the living room. Cry stood beside a cop. The cop was talking to him but looking around the room, searching.

"I hope you don't plan on trying to find something," I said, coming to stand beside Cry.

"And why would I be looking for something Mr. Sioux," the officer asked.

I looked at the name on his uniform, "well Officer Lopez, you're looking around my apartment and seeing as how I haven't been charged with anything I'm assuming you don't have a warrant. But the plain view law won't help you. You were let into my residence by people who aren't on the lease. Therefore you have no legal right to search here and nothing you find you will be able to use."

Lopez smirked, "well for someone who isn't hiding something you sure do have your angles covered."

I folded my arms and looked at him, expressionless, "no. I just took a semester of pre-law."

Lopez stopped looking around and turned to me, flipping open the notebook in his hand, "well there was a noise disturbance at the apartment of a Mr. Stephen Devin and when we got there, Mr. Devin was gone. I know you are currently seeing his wife -"

"EX wife," I corrected.

"Whatever. You guys have a restraining order against him and you and him are both scheduled to take a paternity test to determine the baby that Mrs. Devin is carrying -"

"Ms. Adams," I corrected him once again.

Lopez huffed at me, "my point is, if anyone would be the person to know why there was a disturbance and why Mr. Devin is mysteriously gone, it would be you guys."

I shook my head and leaned against the wall, "no. Not really. I mean he was a drunk, I wouldn't be surprised if he just went on a binge somewhere."

"Mhm. Well maybe you could tell me where you were last night around 10:30pm?"

"Sure. Sophi was having one of those emotional days cause she was pregnant, so I decided to go out and get her something to cheer her up. Ryan was here with her while I was gone," I answered.

"Why were you with her? does she need a babysitter?" Lopez asks, turning to Cry.

"Like Snake said, she was emotional so I had been here during the day helping her pack. I was still here when he got home and when he left," Cry answered calmly.

I silently said a prayer of thanks. Lopez wrote stuff down on his notepad before looking at me again.

"Why are you all cut up?"

"I got into a fender bender when I was out getting Sophi stuff. I have a police report," I answered.

"I'd like to see that," Lopez said.

I nodded and walked over to my briefcase and pulled it out. I walked back over and handed it to him. He looked it over.

"According to this report the accident happened at 10:32pm."

"Sounds about right," I said.

Lopez wrote some info down and then handed it back to me.

"Well why can't I speak to Sophi?" he asked.

"She's pregnant and not feeling well. I also think bombarding her with questions about her ex is going to upset her and she doesn't need the stress," I answered, "maybe another time."

Lopez shut his notebook, "well that's about it. I'll see you again if I have more questions."

He left the apartment and I shut the door behind him. I turned to Cry.

"I'm going to try and explain this to Sophi in the least dramatic way possible. Wait a hour and then take the bag of bloodied clothes from under the bathroom sink and burn them."

Cry sighed but nodded, "we need to talk though."

I nodded and headed back into the bedroom.

Sophi's POV:

I sat in the bed watching tv when the bedroom door opened. I looked up and saw Snake. I smiled at him, turning the tv off.

"Is the cop gone?" I asked.

He nodded and sat next to me, "yeah. He is. Look Sophi, we need to talk."

I swallowed and nodded, butterflies in my stomach.

"The cops came because Stephen is missing. He thought that I may know something about it," he explained softly.

I nodded slowly, "did you? did it happen all over again?"

"My rage?" he asked.

I nodded.

"When the cops were called to his place I was dealing with the car accident. I wasn't there when he disappeared," he explained.

I knew he was avoiding the question but I didn't want to know the truth. Last time it happened, it was so stressful and I hated every minute of it. The less I knew the better.

"Okay. But it's settled now right? we don't have to worry about it?" I asked hopefully.

"They might have more questions. Answer them truthfully if they ask you any thing. But I don't want you to stress out. We have a lot going on and you need to rest and be ready for this baby."

"You're not going any where are you?" I pleaded.

He shook his head, "I'm not leaving you again. And I will NEVER leave this baby, it will all be okay."

He leaned over and kissed me softly.

"Snake," I said softly.

"Yes princess?"

"The baby is kicking. Would you like to feel?"

He gave me a wide smile and nodded. I took his hand and placed it on my stomach where the baby was kicking. I watched as his eyes widened and he looked at me, excitement on his face. I giggled at his expression. He looked back at my belly and moved his hand around to feel it kick again.

I laid back on the bed as Snake gently rubbed my stomach and placed gentle kisses on it, chuckling to himself whenever he felt the baby kick. I closed my eyes and drifted off to sleep.
