Prologue

"No!" Takara cried out, tears running down her face as Trey's lifeless eyes looked up at her. "You didn't have to-"

"Oh but didn't I? You knew what would happen if you allowed anyone to know who you truly were. You knew there would be consequences for trying to outrun our clan. You knew that you, a half breed, could never have true happiness."

Takara's tongue was desperate to lash out but she knew that that person's words were true. She had known of the consequences and what would come of attaching herself to someone. She had known that because she was half human and half Kitsune, she was an abomination who didn't deserve true happiness. But if she knew all of this, why did she grasp Trey's hand? Why did she ignore her instincts and let herself fall for a werewolf?

Because he said everything would be okay.

But everything was not okay; everything had gone straight to hell and there was nothing she could do about it. Takara would now be taken back to Japan in chains and would never seen the outside world that she had longed to explore. She would now never experience a mated life with Trey by her side and would never know the joy of having children.

I'll never see Trey again.

Takara's hands began to sweat, her heartbeat rising. The fact that Trey was lying there with dead eyes had finally sunken into her heart and soul. Trey was dead and had gone somewhere that even she couldn't get to him-

A spark lit up Takara's eyes as she remembered a conversation she had had with Trey a while back.

"Since Kitsunes suck out people's souls, does that mean they can bring them back just as easily?"

"They actually can but they have to bring back the soul without three hours and . . ."

"And what?"

"It requires a sacrifice."

"Like what?"

"Well, since Kitsunes don't have souls, they give up their powers in return and become powerless. That's the only thing that we Kitsunes have that is equal value to a soul."

"But what if Kitsunes had souls and gave that in return instead of their powers?"

"There's no telling. Kitsunes have never had souls."

" . . . But what about you?"

"For me, it'd be like giving up my human half and becoming a full Kitsune . . . In other words, I would outlive you by centuries. But hey, I would only have to do that if it was a full moon so it's not that bad."

"Oh . . . Do me a favor."

"What?"

"Don't ever do that if you don't have access to all of your powers."

"Even if you were dead?"

"Yes."

"But why?"

"Because you shouldn't have to outlive me. I'm your mate. If I die before you, you'll never be completely happy."

" . . . Okay then."

"Promise?"

"I promise."

Takara bit her lip as she realized that she couldn't give up her powers for the return of Trey's soul since she only had a fraction of her usual powers right now. If only it wasn't the full moon! Then she could easily wipe out the enemy standing in front of her and bring Trey's soul back from the afterlife.

But it was a full moon tonight.

That only left her one option.

She would have to give up her soul.
