Emily and Beverly Wright

Emily was walking into her new job at the hospital, she was working as a nurse after her fiance told her to get a job and get out of the house, she walked into the building then walked to the front desk. The woman sitting behind the desk had darker skin and long black hair pulled back out of her face but with short strands framing her long thin face, she looked up at Emily and said, “Can I help you?”

Emily smiled at her then said, “I’m starting here today.”

She nodded and then said, “Oh you must be Emily then.”

She nodded and said, “I am.”

She stood and held her hand out for her to shake then said, “I’m Beverly, how about I show you around to the stations then we can get started.”

Emily nodded then said, “That sounds great.”

Beverly led her to the room where she would put her bag and change after the end of the day, she set her bag down close to Beverly’s then said, “Is my uniform here or do I have to wait on it?”

Beverly smiled and said, “It's right this way,” She pointed to a small clothes rack on the wall, “I’ll go out into the hall and let you change.”

Emily Nodded then said, “Thank you I’ll be right out.”

Beverly walked out of the room and sat down on a bench while Emily changed in the other room.

Emily walked out in her uniform with her long red hair tied back similar to Beverly’s hair, she looked at her then said, “Okay I think I’m ready.”

Beverly nodded, then said, “You look great, okay so I’m going to let you come with me on my rounds. I have to go check on a few patients.”

She nodded then followed her to a small room, Beverly walked in first then said, “Alright so this one’s probably going to be asleep but he’s been here a while so we need to make sure all of his medicine is still good and that he doesn’t have any sores or anything like that.”

Emily nodded and followed her into the room, she looked over and saw the sleeping man in the bed then said, “How long has he been here?”

Beverly looked at him then said, “A couple of months I’d say, his family can’t take care of him so they sent him here.”

She nodded and then said, “That’s too bad.”

“At least he’s getting help, that's what I care about.”

She nodded then helped move him a little to check his back for any sores, then checked on his medicine after changing the sheets on the bed. They left the room and Beverly said, “our next one is on the second floor.”

She nodded and then said, “Okay.” She looked down at their hands, at how close they were together then said, “So do you have a husband or anything at home?”

She shook her head then said, “No just me, what about you?”

Emily looked down at her hand and at the ring on her finger then said, “Well we’re engaged but he wants to get married soon.”

Beverly looked at the ring then said, “Oh congratulations then.”

“Thank you.”

Beverly looked at her then said, “Is something wrong?”

Emily shook her head then said, “No it’s just I’m not sure if I’m ready, something just doesn’t feel right.”

She nodded then said, “I understand, do the two of you live together?”
