It had been almost an hour. The two had gone around the city a bit, looking at things here and there. It was mostly Kazuha initiating the small talk, with Scaramouche reluctantly replying.
Of course, they were getting some stares, but that was to be expected. A Fatui harbinger from Inazuma having a nice leisurely day with another man from Inazuma. It was definitely something the people of Liyue didn't see everyday.
After a bit of walking, Kazuha had something else planned that he wished to keep a secret.
Scaramouche sighed, they'd left the city as they were on a long walk up a mountain. Though it was fairly close to the harbor, he was still nervous for where he was taking him.
"Where exactly are we going?" Scaramouche impatiently asked, starting to grow tired of this little get-together they were having.
Kazuha didn't seem exhausted in the slightest, "You'll see. We're almost there." At this point, the sun was about to set.
But finally, Kazuha stopped. They'd reached the top of the cliff side, "Well, we're here." He pointed out to the beautiful view of the sun setting over the ocean, with the bright lights of Liyue reflecting onto the water.
Scaramouche had to admit, the view was indeed breathtaking. He wasn't really one to stop and enjoy nature, and it seemed Kazuha was one of those people. He seemed to be very in tune with nature, Scaramouche found that interesting about him.
"It's beautiful, isn't it?" Kazuha smiled, looking back at him.
Taking his eyes away from the ocean, his gaze turned to Kazuha. To his surprise, his heart had skipped a beat. Perhaps it was caused by the exhausting hike up there?
Averting his eyes, Scaramouche agreed, "Yeah, I suppose it is."
Kazuha calmly sat down on the edge of the cliff, "See? Having friends isn't all that bad, right?"
"I mean, so far.." Scaramouche sat next to the man, still avoiding his gaze.
In all honesty, Scaramouche always wanted a friend. He wanted to be able to feel that emotional connection to someone. And quite frankly, he was never able to feel anything for anyone. He was incapable of feeling empathy for others, at least, he hadn't felt anything in a long time.
Kazuha leaned back, shifting his weight onto his hands behind him, "This is one of my favorite spots to spend on my free time. It's always so calming to the ears, the eyes as well."
Scaramouche swiftly looked in Kazuha's direction, hopeful that he wouldn't notice him looking. Of course, Kazuha was always a step ahead, so obviously he was already looking at him.
In an attempt to change the subject, Kazuha cleared his throat, "So, what is it like? The Fatui, I mean."
"That's classified information," Scaramouche told him off. Eventually though, he sighed, giving into the temptation to talk about himself, "It's.. fun."
"Fun..?" Kazuha tilted his head. How could something like the Fatui be fun? Scaramouche really was strange.
Scaramouche nodded, "Well, they found me when I was at a.. fairly low point in my life. They gave me a way to do as I please. So yes, it's quite fun."
Leaning forward again, Kazuha rested his arms on his knees and turned to Scaramouche, a look of pure innocence on his face, "Do you ever regret it?"
The Harbinger angrily scoffed, "What's with all of these personal questions? Are you interrogating me?"
"It was a simple question, really," Kazuha replied. His response seemed to irritate the other man, but Kazuha thought that was quite amusing.
Scaramouche rolled his eyes as he turned away from him, "Why would I regret it?"
Kazuha shrugged his shoulders. He gazed longingly into the beautiful sea that had turned a warm shade of orange and pink, thanks to the sunset, "Maybe you secretly wish for a life of solitude. A life without constant destruction and evil schemes. To feel joy, calmness, even love." After his little monologue, he looked directly into Scaramouche's eyes.
He was a bit surprised. Though, he couldn't tell if the confusion was caused by his deep, personal questions, or if it was because he actually agreed with him.
Scaramouche fell silent, he wanted so desperately to reply to the man with a good comeback, but he was speechless.
Was that really how he felt?
Was he actually just longing to feel what love is? What joy is? Or even just to feel a sense of calm?
It was the truth. Ever since he came into being, he'd always wished for a heart. He wanted to feel. No matter what emotion, negative or positive, he wanted to experience it.
Yet after so many years without finding that heart, he soon gave up all hope, which led him to join the Fatui.
So many years, yet the only emotions he felt were resentment and a longing for something more to his life.
And so, he thought maybe it was time. The universe put this man right in front of him for a reason. Maybe Kazuha would be the one to show him what's it's like to have real human emotions.
Even if the feeling was new, it intrigued Scaramouche. He did always want that personal connection with someone, maybe now was the time he actually made a friend.
Scaramouche eventually exhaled, placing his hands on his head as if he were experiencing a headache, "What is wrong with me..?" He muttered to himself.
"There's nothing wrong with you," Kazuha answered. Though Scaramouche had no idea he could hear him, "Forming deep friendships can prove difficult, especially when you're not experienced."
He scoffed at Kazuha's statement, "Easy for you to say. I'm sure you have no issues making friends with how stubbornly persistent you are.."
Kazuha leaned his head back to gaze into the sky, which was starting to be filled with visible stars, "I've only had one truly close friend. We did everything together. But.. all good things must come to an end."
As Scaramouche examined Kazuha's face, he could tell even through his smile, that it was a painful memory.
Surprisingly enough, he started to genuinely feel bad for him, which was quite rare. Once again, feeling these new emotions, such as sympathy, were completely foreign to him. Of course, he didn't want to let show, so he kept his mouth shut.
"Anyway," Kazuha groaned a bit as he stood up. They'd been sitting there for longer than they thought, "We should start heading back to the city. It's getting quite dark out."
Scaramouche stood as well, giving him a firm nod to let him know he agreed.
As the two began to decline down the hill, Scaramouche shouldn't help but watch Kazuha's movements from behind. He had such a calming aura to him. It was almost comforting.
Out of pure disgust, Scaramouche swiftly shook his head in attempt to get rid of such thoughts.
