I keep repeating this mantra in my head as I sit in the lobby chair, waiting for my appointment. The elderly secretary who led me into the room flashes a bright smile as I fidget, nervous and impatient for what's waiting behind the large wooden door I'm facing. The building I had just entered is breathtaking and overlooks all of New York City. On the tenth floor, the polished floors echo the clicks from a group of high-heeled female employees who scurry past me, giving me small, apprehensive looks.
Turning back to the door, I await my possible doom. I am now conveniently located across from the very room where the most important man in the tower is waiting. Not knowing what to expect, I take a deep breath to calm my nerves and hide any overwhelming emotions.
A few seconds later, the heavy door swings open and several smartly dressed gentlemen exit the room. I can't see past them, and I quickly look away before I catch a glimpse of him. Mrs. Lowry leaps up and takes my hand, forcing me out of my chair. She hastily whispers, "It's your turn, Ms. Knight. I hope all goes well," and she sends me a small wink. My back becomes rigid, and I only give her a slight nod. My assistant, Reginald, who is standing at the secretary's desk, mouths something, asking me if he should follow me. I shake my head at him, and he stands back, his stoic face revealing nothing. I take a deep breath and make my entrance through the door. As I step into the office, the first object I notice is a black office chair situated behind the dark maple desk. The lights are dimmed, and it's eerily quiet. The chair faces the large glass-paneled window, so I can't see the person sitting in it.
"Ah, so she has decided to return," a deep voice murmurs.
The chair swivels around.
