Prologue- Eight Years Earlier
"This won't hurt at all." If there were ever five words that no one would believe, those were it. However, childish innocence will believe anything. Children are impressionable and pure, easy to lie to. In fact, they are so easy to lie to that people begin to take advantage of them. At the same time, some people are wiling to do anything to keep themselves alive. Including sacraficing their only child for a meal.
"I promise. If you don't look, you wont even feel it,' the voice said again. During my seven years of existance, there are a few things that I have learned. One, people dont want to help you. Mamma and Pappa sold me to the big manner house down the road from our small apartment, and they never looked back as the tall man took me away. No sorry, no it will be better, just a quiet sigh from Mamma and a pat on the back from Pappa, as if I had done something great for them. The only thing that I've done for them is allowed them to pay for another meal... just one more.
"Please..." I begged the man, my voice weak from days without food and water. He looked at me, and I saw nothing my my face reflected in his black eyes. He was emotionless, his voice, his face, and his head was unnaturally steady as he guided the needle to my arm.
I squirmed, but the leather braces that tied me to the cold chair prevented me from moving. "Why..." I couldn't comprehend why he was doing this. Why would someone want to stick a needle in me, and inject the watery black liquid, the same black as the man's eyes?
He ignored my pleas, and i squeezed my eyes shut as the needle pierced my skin, as it had done two times previously. Despite my never looking at the needle, the image of the needle slowly forcing the liquid into my veins and making them run black forced itself into my eye. I could feel the liquid slide down my arm, yet it was under my skin. For the first time I opened my eyes to confirm the image that was in my head, and I instantly regretted it.
In the moment I opened my eyes, something curious yet scary happened. In the moment that my eyes were open, I witnessed true evil. In the moment that my eyes were open, everything that I knew became a lie. In the moment that I saw, I saw for the first time. In the moment that I was truely aware of the real world, my innocence shattered.
