The Audience

King Henry had insisted I sit beside him during an audience one afternoon as if I was already wife 144.  Perched on a smaller version of his massive reinforced throne in my best dress, I gazed out at the rest of the court. Everyone seemed to be avoiding making eye contact, as if I was a dead woman walking.

There were a number of sinners making their official appearance at court. Bankers, politicians, important merchants, and minor overlords just gaining power in the turf wars that went on outside our small bubble of pretend paradise. I watched sinner after sinner bow to King Henry, feeding his ego with praise and gifts.

After a while, my mind began to drift. I had no idea how I could spend the rest of my afterlife doing nothing but this, that is until Henry sets his eyes on wife number 145 and finds some way to dispose of me.

My attention was brought back into focus as murmurs of shock and awe as a tall slender sinner entered the hall. All eyes followed him as he approached the dais where King Henry and I sat. With an elegant bow, the sinner introduced himself, "The name's Alastor, a pleasure to meet you, your majesty."
