The morning came sooner than I wanted it to. I hadn't slept all night. I was afraid that Ed would pay me a visit again. Carol's abusive and sick husband. I closed my eyes tight, pushing away the image of his advances on me and his threats that scared me so much that I never spoke a word to Carol or anyone else in this little group. Here I was alone for the most part and I could tell everyone took pity on me and I was so useless that I wasn't sure I even deserved that.
I worked with the other girls in the camp with the womanly chores while the men handled any dangers that came up.
"Jade!" Carl called as he got to my tent "Jade can I come in?" He asked. He sounded excited about something. I sighed and got up and opened my tent and looked at the little brown hair, blue eyed boy smiling at me
"What's up?" I mumbled to him. Carl was a sweet kid and tried to talk to me as much as he could because he hated seeing me alone. That and I was pretty sure Amy put him up to it.
"Shane's gonna show me some new knots," he said excitedly. Why anyone would be excited for that is beyond me. I nodded and forced a smile
"That sounds cool" I said and stepped out of the tent already fully dressed and ready for the day to begin. He followed as I walked to the campfire and saw food was set out and ready. Or whatever they could spare. I got what I could and started to eat
"Maybe I can show them to you later" he offered and I nodded
"Maybe" I mumbled looking down at the food as I started to eat. It wasn't much of anything.
"Some of the group went into the city to scavenge" Carl informed me as I ate.
"Carl?" Lori had come up and was looking at Carl confused then looked to me "what are you doing bothering Jade?" She asked him
"I'm not bothering her," Carl spoke up.
"He's not" I assured her and she nodded
"Well don't be long. You need a haircut later" she told him and he groaned in his way of complaining. "Be sure to send him my way" Lori told me with a smile then left after I gave her a light nod.
"So what do you say?" Carl asked me and I glanced over to him and saw his blue eyes looking right at me
"To what?" I asked my mouth full of food
"To learning some new knots?'' He clarified for me. I thought about it but in all honesty I didn't really care.
"Maybe Carl...it depends on what I'm doing" I told him, trying to be nice to him but my unenthuseastic tone was hard to hide. Carl knew I was always keeping to myself but he still tried and never took my tone to heart. Never took it offensively.
"I'll check in on you later. I'm going to go see what Sophia is up to" Carl finally said after he realized I wasn't talking anymore. I finished eating and got moving to get to my chores and that kept me near people most of the time or chores that took lots of time to do. Anything to keep me away from... Ed. I went with Amy to look for Mushrooms. This got me away from the camp and that was even better.
"How are you?" Amy finally asked me after we walked for a good long while. I glanced at her, shocked by the sudden talking that was going on now.
"Fine," I mumbled and turned back to the ground.
