Chapter 3
They went up the deck and there was an island in sight. The tide was high and the breeze was cold and strong and Eddie’s hair goes ruffled. As they look up, they observed that the night was very dark, but even with the island still small in view, the light that they making was proving to be efficient.
As minutes began to pass, the island was beginning to get bigger and its inhabitants were getting clearer. It nearly looked like a merry village of thieves. Eddie could see some prisoners too, only they were bound by chains.
Gillard was beside him wearing his usual scowl. “Why are they wearing chains?” he asked, his gaze never leaving the men.
A sudden loud voice behind him answered. “They still havena adjustin’ te’ their new life.” It was Hungrard. His arms were crossed and he was dressed like yesterday, but today he is wearing an additional cape that was draped on his back. It was stained.
It was stained with blood.
Eddie should have feared him when he saw the cape but he did not. If he hadn’t feared him when he killed Cal, why now and why not then?
He faced Hungrard. His face was contained but he was very sure that nothing could hide the loathing and anger in his very gray eyes. “Then why am I not in those?” He looked at the men again. “I, too, am like them, cannot adjust.”
Eddie felt being in Hungrard’s scrutiny for moments eyeing him full-body. He grunted. “Yer adjustin’”
His face whirled to face Hungrard. His hands were fisted and his teecth were clenching. “I have not adjusted” he growled.
“I dinna say ye have adjusted, I said ye were adjustin’.”
Eddie roared. “Bastard!” He charged at Hungrard, knocking down the people in his way, but before he could even lay a hand on the rotten sod, he had a glimpse of his smile and then he was knocked down on the floorboards of the ship.
He opened his eyes and found himself being held down by Dunlop, the vice-captain of the ship. There were outraged gasps on the background. When Eddie looked at him, he was surprised for Dunlop has the gentlest brown eyes that reminded him of a doe. He had a curly mass of brown hair and his skin was scarless and is as white as snow. He had a face that tells you to trust him, but Eddie couldn’t do that. Not when he’s being held by his sticky arms.
Dunlop looked down at Eddie. “Ye’ve got yerself in a bit of bit trouble, pup.” If he was said to be gentle a while ago, he isn’t acting like it now when his grip on Eddie tightened. Eddie could hear the captain’s laugh on the background. “Make sure who ye’re messin’ with.” His voice was like an icicle being pricked on you.
Hungrard’s smiling voice broke through. “Let ‘im up, Dun. ‘e’s jus a lad who tried te’ attack me. That’s all. Ye wouldn’t kill a boy for tryin’ te’ kill ye, now would ye’?”
Is he trying to be funny? Or was that sarcasm?
Dunlop still held him down while he was struggling to get away from his massive grasp. He hadn’t noticed that a lot of people had witnessed the entire scene and was circling in on around them. Even Gren and Maegan did, without thinking rushed to help Eddie up but were stopped as they were held by two pirates.
“Hungrard?” Dunlop stonily asked. “Are you actually insane? Have I been following a crazy person all these years? Tell me, why don’t you?”
Hungrard laughed again and patted Dunlop on his shoulders hard but it didn’t look to Dunlop that it hurt him. “Ye’ve known me for more than ten years, old boy. Besides, I thought that was what made ye’ follow me. ”
