“We’re going to be late if you don’t hurry up!” I hear Cassie yell through the bathroom door to me. She may be my best friend but I swear she’s the mother of the two of us. She’s always making sure I’m ready to go on time, even if it is just for a movie.
“I’m almost ready,” I yell as I put my brush on the sink and quickly braid my hair.
”You’re always the last to be ready, Becky!” She rolls her eyes as I open the bathroom door and meet her in the hallway.
“Yep that’s me. Thanks, mom!” I playfully shoot a glare at her.
“Welcome,” she says and dramatically runs through the hallway to the front door. “Come on, though. This is Star Wars that we’re going to watch. I. Don’t. Want. To. Miss. It.” She pauses between each word of the last sentence to get her point across.
”Okay, okay,” I say as I grab my car keys and phone and follow Cassie out the door to my jeep. I know how much she’s obsessed with Star Wars, but with my track record with driving, we’ll make it to the theater in no time. “You know, I would be more excited to watch this movie if David Tennant played in it,” I say, picking on her. I back out of the driveway and make my way to the movie theater.
“Oh c’mon, Beck. Tennant can’t play in everything! Besides, Christopher Eccleston is better.” She playfully smacks my arm as we jump into our usual ‘Which Doctor is better’ argument.
“Oh how I wish I could be Rose,” I sigh daydreaming about going on a trip with the Doctor.
”Earth to Becky, we should be talking about Star Wars, not Who,” Cassie snaps her fingers in front of my face, even though she’s just as much a Whovian as I am. At this point, I’m pulling into the movie theater parking lot. Cassie checks the time on her phone. “Hmmmm, five minutes to spare, not bad…”
“Oh hush,” I say back. We walk into the theater, buy our tickets, popcorn, and candy, and then head inot the screen room that has “Star Wars” written above the door. We find two empty seats close to the front and sit down. Cass can hardly contain her excitement. Just as we sit down, the lights go dark and the movie starts playing. Our eyes are glued to the screen for the entire two hours.
When the credits start floating up the screen, everyone gets up and files out of the screen room. “That. Was. Amazing!” Cassie exclaims.
“I actually really enjoyed it,” I say and we start a long list of our favorite scenes. We’re just about to my jeep and we hear it. That sound that’s so familiar though I’ve never heard it in real life. Cassie and I look at each other and freeze, knowing we both heard the same thing. I slowly turn around and see a bright light around the side of the building. When I look back to Cassie, I know we both are thinking the same thing. Without pause, we dart towards the light. As we get closer, we find a huge blue box sitting against the wall. In big, white letters reads ‘POLICE PUBLIC CALL BOX’ across the top. As if on cue, a tall man with shaggy hair opens the police box door and stumbles out.
“Well that was easy-peasy.” He says and gives us a cheesy grin.
“Am I dreaming?” I say out loud accidentally.
“Well that’s only for you to decide, honey.” He says. He holds his hand out for us to shake. “I’m-“
“We know who you are,” Cass says as she returns the handshake. “My name is Cassie, and this is Becky,” She points to me. Instead of shaking his hand, I stand there with my mouth hanging wide open.
“Aww, c’mon. Is there something stuck in my teeth?” The man asks as he covers his mouth. “I knew I shouldn’t have eaten that spinach!” Cass laughs and shakes her head.
“Nah, Beck is just shy. And maybe a little starstruck. She is like in love with you, ya know.” I smack Cassie for saying that.
“She’s kidding,” I finally say and shake his hand. “Nice to meet you, Doctor.”
“And you as well,” he winks at me. “Right, so now that we’re familiar with each other, how about a journey?” The Doctor turns toward his TARDIS and walks inside. We follow close behind.
