Today was a great day. I got an A on my science test and I feel like I'm flying. I run out of the school racing towards home to tell my parents. "I just want them to be proud of me," I think to myself. I continue running dodging people as I go, but I grow tired after several minutes from my fifteen pound dark green backpack.
I look at my surroundings and see an alley just behind a building called Nick's Appliances and More. I was skeptical at first, but I decide that it won't take long. I look both ways before crossing the street and rush in the opening. I make my way through quickly and sigh with relief as I reach the end. I'm just about to walk away when I hear a loud bang from behind me.
I turned quickly and saw a man in a blue jacket. He doesn't seem to notice I'm there and I wonder silently to myself," Why is just standing there staring into the dumpster ?" It's almost like he feels my stare when he takes off running. The mysterious man comes at me and passes quickly, almost like I was invisible. I would have thought nothing of this, but then his white stained shirt with a bright red caught my eye.
I wouldn't even know how to describe the color because that's all it was to me, a color. A wonderful color that is in a rainbow or what the sunset looks like when the sky is dim. A color a kid would draw a picture with for their mother. It's even the color of my bedroom wall.
This color feels a little different to me though. When it leads to the dumpster,it seems to get darker. I would never feel disturbed over a color, but there was so much of it. The lid of the trash bin wasn't as heavy as I thought it was going to be. It slammed hard against the brick wall and closed the same, but that didn't take me long to get a good look at her or her pale lips.
My legs began to move and I followed. I followed them out of the alley before my shocked mind came back to reality. I dash away leaving it all behind. I leave behind the memory. When I can no longer see the color I begin to slow down. My legs go numb and my chest starts to hurt, but I can't stop. What if he comes back? I grab my house door and slam it behind me hard locking it.
I run up the staircase ignoring my mother from the kitchen asking me how was school. I throw my bag on the floor and climb into bed hiding under the covers. I stayed there until I heard my mother call me from outside the door." It's time to get up for school." Several seconds pass," Do I have to?"I hear myself say weakly.
" Yes," my mother replies," you missed school yesterday and you have a science test to make up." She descended the stairs leaving me in my own silence." It must have been a dream," I hear myself say outloud. I pull off my blanket, climb out of bed, and walk into the bathroom. I grab my toothbrush and accidentally drop the cap of the toothpaste trying to open it.
I bend down to pick it up and notice a drop of blood on my shoe. Thinking I'm bleeding I grab the lid quickly stopping when I see the bruises on my knuckles. My eyes travel up my arm and discover red scratch marks. I look up at my reflection trying to see something or anything familiar, but I can't seem to find myself under all the blood. What really happened yesterday?
