Jem scrolled through the pictures Tessa had sent him of her and Jamie while he sat in the waiting room. Jamie hadn't been happy when they drove to Tessa's house and then left him there, but the two-year-old had calmed down after being reminded that he was going to have a sleepover with "Auntie Tessa" and that there would probably be cookies involved.
After dropping Jamie off, Will and Jem had driven to the outpatient center where Will was scheduled to have his troublesome tonsils taken out. Will had been taken into surgery almost immediately and Jem went out to the waiting room to wait for him.
He was just about to text Tessa and ask her to send more pictures of his adorable son when he heard someone say, "James Carstairs?"
Jem looked up to see a nurse standing in the doorway leading back to where the rooms and operating theatres were. She was holding a clipboard and looking around the waiting room. He put his phone away and stood up, saying, "That's me."
She smiled and waved him forward. "Your husband is out of surgery," she said. "He did great. He'll have a sore throat for a few days but he'll be fine."
"Is he awake yet?" Jem asked. "Can I see him?"
"He just woke up a few minutes ago. You can see him whenever you're ready. I have to warn you, though, he's a little confused. He may not remember you at first."
"I've seen worse," he said, and he had. Will had gotten so drunk once in college that he forgot who Jem was and thought Jem was kidnapping him when he tried to take him back to the dorms. He then proceeded to tell everyone they passed on the street, including a police officer, that he was being kidnapped, which led to Jem having to do a lot of explaining to avoid being arrested.
"Right this way, then," the nurse said.
She led Jem down a hallway to the same room they had been in for a few minutes while Will changed and had an IV put in before the surgery. She opened the door for him and let him in, then let the door close behind him. Will was sitting up in his bed and looking around the room with a very dazed look in his eyes. He jumped when his eyes landed on Jem, then leaned slightly forward and narrowed his eyes, looking Jem up and down.
"Wow," Will said with a very hoarse voice. "You're hot as hell."
Jem struggled to hold in his laughter and discreetly pulled his phone out to record Will. Tessa would kill him if she didn't get to see this. "I believe you've already expressed that multiple times."
Will looked confused. He cocked his head like a puppy and said, "I don't know what you're talking about cause I've never met you before in my life. Like, ever."
"I'm Jem, remember? Your husband?"
Will whistled and winked at Jem. "I hit the jackpot, didn't I? How did I ever get someone as hot as you to marry me?"
Jem concealed a laugh behind his hand and moved to sit in the chair next to the bed. "Sometimes I wonder that myself. Do you remember Jamie?"
Will's face lit up and for a second Jem thought that he actually remembered his own son. "I love Jamie! He's my favorite character on Mythbusters!"
"No, no, no," Jem said, shaking his head. "Jamie is your- our- son. He's two. Are you sure you don't remember him?"
"Our son? Never heard of him." Will shrugged. "Does he look like me or like you?"
"Neither of us, actually. He's adopted."
"Oh..." Will said. He looked like he was thinking hard about something for a minute before saying, "Can I go home now?"
"In an hour or two," Jem said. "We'll get you some chocolate ice cream and then you can go to sleep. How does that sound?"
Will looked excited for a minute, but then he started tearing up. Jem immediately panicked, afraid that Will was in pain or that he was reacting badly to something they had given him, and asked, "What's wrong?"
Will sniffled and wiped away the tears with the back of his hand. "We can't get chocolate ice cream cause the Oompa-Loompas make it and I don't think Willy Wonka pays them and they don't want to make chocolate ice cream and they'll hate us." He was fully crying by the end and Jem reached forward to wrap his arms around him, no matter how much Will didn't remember him.
"It's alright," he said. "We'll make sure that no Oompa-Loompas were involved in the making of the chocolate ice cream we get, okay? They won't hate us at all. I'm sure Willy Wonka pays them very well, too."
"Okay," Will said. Jem pulled back and sat down in the chair again. He noticed Will staring at him with a slightly confused look on his face once he got himself situated and was just about to ask him if he was okay when Will interrupted him.
"Sorry, my brain's a little bleh right now. Who are you again? And why are you so hot?"
