Swatch was doing a final sweep of the mansion, making sure no one else got left behind. They walked down the halls peeping into each door and calling out. It seemed like everyone had left. 'Good,' they thought as they kept walking. Soon they had reached the final room that they had to check. Actually they hadn't checked it at all, they had been avoiding that room. It made their feathers fluff up.

The basement.

'God, why did she have to have a basement,' they thought.

They opened the door, a musty smell seeped out. They turned on their flashlight and descended down the stairs. The place looked horrendous. The walls were cracked. Moss grew in some of the cracks. There were vines everywhere. The floor felt like mud under their talons, gross. They'd have to clean their feet later.

The darkness, it was everywhere. Darkness is what took up the space in the empty basement. Who knew what could be lurking in there? An insidious smile? A horde of mice? Swatch shook their head, shaking away their thoughts. 'Focus on the task, you'll only be here for a moment. It's not like anyone lives here,' they thought.

They kept walking and pointing their flashlight around, looking for any sign of life. Nothing. Not even a maus.

They reached the end of the basement. 'Nothing lives here, guess I better start packing my own bags,' they turned and were about to take another step when they heard something hatch. They jumped slightly at the sound and quickly pointed their flashlight at it.

It was an egg. A blue egg. And it was hatching. Did someone leave their child here? Whose egg was this? Swatch couldn't think of anyone who laid any blue eggs. They crouched down to take a closer look at it.

Too lost in their thoughts and the fascinating sight of life, the egg finished hatching and out popped a little head with black hair. "Mama?!" it said as it looked around. It climbed out of the egg and tried to make its way to Swatch, shouting "Mama!" "Mama!" again and again with its arms held out.

Swatch awkwardly picked up the tiny little creature. It beamed up at them excitedly, waiting for... something. Swatch didn't know what to do. Its parents were nowhere else in sight and they no doubt did not want their child back. It seemed the only thing Swatch could do was temporarily foster the baby until they found some parents.

They sighed and carefully placed the child in their suit pocket.
