It was dark, so dark it seemed to crowd and smothers your senses. But you knew where you were. Even though the air was still, you knew. They were here. They? You’re not entirely sure about, but it’s always the same. Every night, like clockwork now. Same dream, same time you’re sure. But, you were yet to find out what was out there. ‘Use sleeping pills’ the doctor said, but no. Every night they come back and every night you’re rewarded with a new piece of information. One, you’re sure to forget in the morning.
It was only recently that you’ve felt in danger while awake. Your every waking moment haunted by something unseen. Maybe this would finally be the night. But first, it was time to run.
You’d think that in a dark place everywhere would be a potential hiding place. Not here. Here, like most nights you’re found. There’s no escaping the mysterious footsteps that chase you. Their hot breath panting against the nape of your neck. It’s always the same. And just when you think you’ve made it away, they seem to be even closer than before. You stop to catch your breath. They stop to catch their breath. You scan the black, empty expanse, and they scan you. Their prey. It’s like a game of cat and mouse, a mind game, a trick. There was no set direction, but you knew in the deep recesses of your mind that you were running for your life.
Finally, you stop running, you can’t keep going. Short of breath you think you might pass out soon. And that’s when you notice. They haven’t stopped. They’re simply gaining on you, and it’s too late for you to run. You feel the urge take over your body, but your knees simply buckle, and you crumble to the ground, you didn’t think it could get darker until you’ve actually passed out.
It’s that time now. The time when you finally come to, but when you open your dry, tired eyes all you’re faced with is you. You’re staring at yourself, at the features you know all too well. Except they seem different. Callous, dark somehow. That’s when you notice, when you survey the room. You’re no longer part of that nightmare but you’re back in world again. You’re back where you started, but that’s hardly so, you can’t remember the face that is staring back at you from above. So, you roll onto your side in the direction of your lover, but you’re alone in a bed that is soaked all over. Jumping from the bed you can’t help but stare in horror. Is that blood on your bed and is it a problem? You thought it was a dream but when you look back it wasn’t. You weren’t being chased because you are the one now in trouble. So, you stumble onto the bed and stare at the mirror. Who knew you could do it? Who knew you’d finally kill him.
