"What the fuck?"
A new and unfamiliar voice echoed coldly in the air.
Behind her, Jisung whispered, "Chenle? What the hell are you doing here?"
The figure was blurry, but she could make out that he was one of Jisung's friends, definitely a high school student.
Chenle's mouth was agape as he moved forward cautiously, staring at the scene. She couldn't see it, but he was mostly glancing at her in utter confusion. "I- I left my phone at your place and I really need it tomorrow. I came to your house and your back door was open so I came back here and— dude, what are you doing to her?"
"No!" Jisung tsked— "we're being robbed."
"What?!"
Before any of them could respond, however, distant shuffling sounds broke their little bubble.
The two boys instantly shared a knowing look, and Jisung pointed at a sturdy vase by her dining table— "the vase."
Chenle nodded, rushing to the empty pot and holding it high in his hands as a weapon. He tiptoed back against the wall, waiting right by the patio door. Jisung hurriedly finished the last few loose strings on the rope, setting Nari's hands free.
Blood was rushing to her head as she scrambled to untie her feet. She tried not to completely freak out when Jisung left her side, rushing to stand on the other end of the wall, opposite of Chenle. Nari spotted the lanky thief just as he walked back into the room with a livid look of alarm.
"Where the fuck—"
Chenle struck first; the slim, metal vase bashed against the lanky, long-haired intruder and sent him crumbling to the ground.
Fuck— she pulled desperately at her feet as the room rose to chaos: she had barely untied herself when a roaring scream reverberated around the walls of her living room; Jisung had lunged at the greasy motherfucker, pinning him against the wall as he landed the man a noisy punch.
Nari turned around and even in her blur, it felt like slow motion, the way the last man bolted her way with rage-filled eyes. Holy fuck— she scurried backwards, pushing her legs as she tried to force as much distance between them two, but he gained on her fast; blood rushed past her ears, her leg raised to kick him off when—
BANG!
Nari screamed; a loud gunshot exploded, turning her legs to jelly as she fell to the ground. The man in front of her, surprisingly, fell too. She stared with ragged breaths as the man before her writhed in pain, groaning as he screamed, "you got me in the fuckin' ass!"
She finally looked up and found four police officers busting into the room, guns drawn as they screamed for the burglars to get on the ground. At that moment, she felt her entire world lighten, and it was like she could breathe properly for the first time that night.
"Nari, come on—" Jisung took her by the arms, lifting her up.
It's finally over.
She breathed a sigh of relief, gripping Jisung's arms tightly. She let the boy guide her as everyone filed out of her house and into the quiet neighborhood street— which was not so quiet anymore.
There was an ambulance and two police cars with their blinding siren lights spinning her into a weird disorientated state; at this point, most of their neighbors were peeking from their front doors in their pajamas."Here—" Jisung interrupted her from her thoughts— "your glasses."
She gasped lightly; "thank you—" she took the bloody thing and fixed it on her face. She took in the now crystal-clear details, eyes immediately darting towards the police cars where their intruders were being led to. By then, two of them were already escorted into the cars. The final guy, the one with the greasy hair, stared right back at her. For a moment she felt nauseous, but the policeman rough-housed his head into the car, and then she felt okay.
Now that it was over, exhaustion began to overtake her. Nari scanned the crowd as an officer led the three teenagers towards the ambulance. That was when she saw one familiar face rush towards them, arms flailing in exaggeration.
"Nari, sweetie, thank God you're okay!" Mrs. Katsuki cried.
"Mrs. Katsuki..." Jisung uttered in confusion.
"Oh—" the old lady fanned her face— "I called the police as soon as I headed home, I was so scared that I was too late!"
"Wait, you were the one who called the police?" Jisung asked incredulously.
Now that Nari gave it a proper thought, neither of the two had called the police (successfully) at any point in the night, so it should've been a surprise that they showed up. Mrs. Katsuki followed them as a paramedic guided her to a seat, lifting the jacket off her back.
"But Mrs. Katsuki," Nari interrupted, "how did you know we were being robbed?"
From her memory, she was 100% sure Mrs. Katsuki was oblivious to the situation when they had that conversation.
"I didn't at first, but when we were talking by your porch—" she shook her head as she clutched her chest— "oh, it was so scary! I saw from the mirror inside your house, the bad man standing behind the door. I thought it was Jisung, but you told me he went home and I panicked!"
Nari felt her heart warm from the look of concern on Mrs. Katsuki. She didn't know what came over her, but she stood up at pulled the lady into a tight hug— "thank you, Mrs. Katsuki."
"Oh—" Mrs. Katsuki blushed, pulling away from the hug— "don't you worry about it, dear."
She looked over at Jisung and Chenle with a motherly look. "Why don't I go check for some of the cookies I baked today, you must be hungry from all that!" Before any of them could decline out of politeness, she had already scrambled through the crowd of people, disappearing from view.
Soon enough, Chenle was called by a police officer for questioning, leaving Nari and Jisung alone with the paramedic who continued treating both their wounds. Luckily, none of their injuries were serious, so it didn't take too long.
Afterwards, an officer came over to tell them that their guardians had been informed of the event, and that they would be escorted to the police station for basic questioning. Honestly, all Nari wanted was to get into bed, and looking at Jisung's scrunched nose, she assumed he felt the same.
The boy looked down at her, a smirk forming on his face. "You ready, babe?"
Nari groaned, rolling her eyes as she pushed the boy away. Even after they've just been robbed?
"I'm kidding!" Jisung defended, draping an arm over her shoulder playfully.
She'd be lying, though, if she said she hated his hand holding her like this. Honestly, she'd be lying if she said she didn't like him at all.
Damn, she thought, the playboy next door's not so bad after all.
