In the beginning Rapture seemed like a dream. The idea of an underwater city was a revolutionary concept. Andrew Ryan made it seem like an incredible opportunity for everyone. There were incredible scientific advancements being made, and it was a fresh start for many; a place where the societal hierarchy hadn't yet formed.
Your grandparents were among the "lucky" ones to be chosen as Raptures proud new citizens. It was an exciting and scary time for them. They packed the belongings they deemed absolutely necessary. Anything that didn't come with them was sold or given away. It was time to start anew.
Fast forward to you now. A young adult, born and raised in Rapture. Society was declining as the gap between the rich and the poor grew, but you tried to stay optimistic. You had a life here, friends, and even a job at the cocktail lounge in the Adonis Luxury Resort.
The job wasn't bad. Sure not every day was perfect, but that's to be expected anywhere. For the most part it was pleasant. You were paid well (enough to move out of your parents and get your own place), and loved your coworkers. Another added perk were the eligible bachelor's who could wander in on any given night. One in particular caught your eye.
You had worked at the lounge for a while now and you hadn't seen him before. It was uncommon for new people to show up around town. Then again, some nights you were incredibly busy, so maybe you just hadn't noticed him until now? Even though it would have been hard not to notice someone as handsome as him.
He was tall, with dark eyes and hair. His smile was breathtaking; it absolutely lit up the room. You realized that you looked a beat longer than you should have when his eyes met yours. Your face began to heat up as you turned away. You busied yourself with work as you thought about the good-looking stranger.
He looked so out of place here, like he didn't belong. Maybe he was new? You continued to steal quick glances at the mystery man until a loud grunt snapped you out of your thoughts. A customer had been trying to get your attention. You apologized profusely, asking what you could do for him.
"Gin and Tonic." The customer huffed. He was very obviously annoyed. Some of the men that came in could be aggressive, but generally if you ignored it they would only bother you when they needed more to drink. You hurried to get his drink made, and served it to him with a smile. He nodded his head dryly in thanks.
The night continued without much excitement. A group of men eventually gathered around the stranger. They seemed to be enthralled by his words, drinking up everything he said. He didn't buy himself one drink that night. You could only make out bits and pieces of the conversation going on. Curiosity got the best of you, so you decided to ask one of the men about the newcomer as soon as they came back for another drink.
The man kind of shrugged, "The guy's not opening up a whole lot. From what he's said so far he's from the surface!" Your eyes widened. Almost nobody down here had even seen the surface. You had always wondered what it would be like. To touch grass, feel sun, breathe the fresh air. "Does he have a name?" You questioned. The man shook his head, "Hasn't told us. Just been callin' him Johnny Topside." With that he grabbed his drinks and went back to the group, handing 'Johnny' a beer.
Eventually the crowd began to dwindle until only a couple of customers were left. Johnny headed over to the bar, seeming a little bit timid. "What can I get'cha? " You asked as you looked at him. He looked a little green around the gills as he answered, "Just water, please." You guessed that he probably had a little bit too much to drink. You handed him a glass of ice water as well as some bread from the kitchen. He took it gratefully.
The same customer from early called out to you to get another drink. He had clearly had far too much. However, instead of your boss instructing you to cut people off when they reached their limit you were directed to continue serving them. In your boss's words, 'It's not your business how they spend their money.' Against your better judgement you brought the customer another drink.
As you were handing it to him he grabs your wrist. Inwardly, you began to panic; outwardly, you took a breathe and tried to keep calm. "Has anyone every told you, you have beautiful eyes?" The man asked. His breathe was hot and reeked of alcohol. You thanked him and tried to pull your hand away. "What are you doing after your shift?" He questioned with a perverted smile. It disgusted you. You wished you could slap him, but that would likely result in a big mess.
"I'll probably just go to bed. I've had a long day." You gave him a nervous laugh. Johnny had taken notice of what was happening. The man opened his mouth to continue his attempt at persuasion but Johnny interrupted, "I don't think she's interested." His voice was gruff. He looked like he was feeling better.
The man turned his head toward him with a scowl and stood, "It's best you mind your business." Johnny let out a wry chuckle, clearly unfazed. He looked down at the man, who he towered over, "Let's not cause a scene, pal. I think it's time for you to leave." The man sized Johnny up and decided that it wasn't worth it. He scoffed, shaking his head and got up to leave.
Johnny turned to you asking if you were alright. You nodded and thanked him for helping you out. The situation could have turned bad so quickly if he hadn't intervened. After the incident the two of you got to talking; introducing yourselves. You found out that he was a diver who accidentally discovered the city. You answered all of his questions about Rapture and he explained the wonders of the surface. One thing you had always been fascinated by were stars. You had always wanted to see them, but of course, never had the opportunity.
You went on and on about how you'd seen pictures before, but you couldn't imagine how beautiful they were in real life. "They are gorgeous. Something I'm guilty of taking for granted." Johnny said with a light chuckle. He admired the sparkle in your eye when you talked about things you were interested in.
Eventually, you both began to grow tired. It was very late by this point, and while you didn't want the night to end you were exhausted. You began to close up the bar for the night and as you finished, Johnny spoke up, "Need someone to walk you home?" He sounded nervous as he asked, which you thought was adorable. You nodded, happy to have a companion- especially after the encounter with the belligerent customer earlier.
After a short walk you arrived at your apartment. Johnny rubbed the back of his head awkwardly, "Miss/Mr. (Y/N), I don't mean to sound forward, but-" He paused, looking for the right words, " would you want to accompany me to dinner sometime?"
You couldn't help the huge smile that spread across your face, "I would love to! How does Friday sound?" A light pink dusted his cheeks as he returned the grin, "Friday sounds might fine to me." After giving him a quick peck on the cheek you told him goodnight and went inside; your heart felt like it was beating out of your chest.
