When I got to class the first thing I heard was: "Detention." The teacher, her name yet to be known, looked at her sheet of names and said, "Ptolemy." She said it "putolmy", but it is pronounced "tola-me."
"Ma'am, it's Ptolemy."
"Another detention for being insubordinate."
"What!" I exclaimed. "What did I do?!"
"It is not in your rights to correct a teacher. I have gone to college whereas you have not. I am an educated person and you are a dumb fool. So you must be incorrect about the pronunciation of your name."
"But!"
"No buts! Unless you want another detention."
I suffered through Homeroom and Literature and Language Arts, three classes with Ms. Glockenspiel. Yep you heard me right she was named after a german xylophone.
