There was a woman standing at the water's edge.

Lucy, a pure lady in the full bloom of youth, stood alone on the beach, gazing over the turquoise water with her gentle hazel eyes. Her brown hair danced lightly in the ocean breeze, tickling against one cheek as she smiled to herself with anticipation, resting her cheek against one hand as she traced a finger along her silver necklace. A silver necklace she got for her birthday from someone special. She wore a heterochromatic shirt that left her pale arms bare and a pair of loose obsidian jeans. Her mane flowed in a cocoa torrent past her shoulders, complementing her sincere hazel visage. She stood, awaiting her love.

It must have been fate that brought them together. She knew from the moment she laid eyes on him that she loved him. From then on, she knew that she won’t love someone else, only him. She didn’t believe that someone like him would love her, but thus, the fate changed itself and he loves her just as much as she loves him.

It was like any other day that he decided to meet her on the beach.

"Lucy," Martinus said simply with a smile on his face. His auburn globes complimented his golden hair, brushing against his ears, belying his spirited heart. He was dressed in his usual everyday clothes. He had a toned but slender body covered with tanned skin. As Lucy drew nearer, she caught a note of his familiar scent, a perfume that he uses. She smiled to herself. It always reminded her of the time they shared.

"Tini! I am glad you came." Lucy said breathlessly, reaching out to take him into an embrace. He let her hug him, seeming almost embarrassed about it as he patted her back. With that, they began to walk along the beach.

So," he began, "how've you been lately? How’s the school treating you?"

"Oh, good," Lucy stammered, "everything's been going well, Martinus., and, um...." She blushed. "I missed you... that's all."

Martinus let his hand fall across her back, muttering quickly as if almost embarrassed, "Yeah, I missed you too." Lucy was silent in response, only leaning toward Martinus 's warmth. "You're a good person. You know?"

"Why do you say that all of a sudden...?" she murmured. "I'm not that especially good."

"I figured you should know." He glanced at her before placing his hands behind his head. "Hanging out with a rascal like me hasn't changed you a bit."

"You shouldn't say that about yourself," Lucy whispered. "You're not a rascal. Just strong of spirit."

He laughed at himself and looked up into the sky, dropping his arms and thinking about all the things that had been said of him, and the simple feeling that he was corrupting something pure whenever he hung around Lucy. "Not really. But if you say so."

Lucy slipped her soft hand into his. With a little smile, she stated, "You're so good to me, Martinus. I can never tell you enough how much you mean to me." Martinus held her hand and thought to himself that that was enough -- that if he meant something good to this one person, nothing the rest of the world said mattered.

After a few moments, they found themselves walking down the beach again. Something rose to the front of Lucy's mind -- something she had been trying to beat back all this time. It was so special to her to be with Martinus, and she didn't want to pass that time making them both feel horrible. But it just wouldn't leave her alone.

With concern, Martinus turned his fiery crystals toward her. "Lucy? What's wrong?"

"Martinus ... it's..."

And at that moment everything came together, all the love and the hurt that had been building that day, and he locked his depths with hers and whispered, "You can tell me."

It was like a floodgate burst, or some barrier of fear had been struck down. Lucy shook her head, and everything came out at once. "It's just… I don’t know what I did to deserve someone as amazing as you…When I first met you, I didn’t know what to do…I gaped at you and couldn’t form a single word...And you just smiled at me and hugged me… I have never felt safe, but in your arms, I felt like nothing could ever hurt me…”  Martinus listened silently and solemnly.

At last, when all the words had left her and she was at a loss for words, he reached out to her and took a deep breath to whisper back, "Lucy...You are amazing, I should be surprised that I have someone as amazing as you...." Lucy's eyes began to burn, and she abruptly pulled him into a fierce embrace. His spheres widened at first, but then he too felt overwhelmed by emotion and succumbed to the warmth of her touch.

"You," Lucy whispered, her breath hot on his ear. "As long as you're here, I'll be all right." They held each other as tears trickled down cheeks and dripped onto the shifting sands to be carried away into the sea. With time and soothing embraces, their pain dissipated into a mist swept out by the ocean breeze and into the setting sun.

They basked in each other's quiet companionship for a few moments.

"Look... it's the sunset."

Lucy lifted her head at Martinus 's words to behold the dying sun's fermented radiance. "How beautiful." “Not as beautiful as you.”

After a moment of silence, he took Lucy's hands in his and said quietly and seriously: "Lucy, I need to say something. Without you, I would be the sea without the moon -- the moon without the sun -- a fishing rod without a hook. Heh, you're adorable when you smile. But... you're special to me. I'm serious."

"Martinus," she breathed in response. "You are special to me too. You are my moon and stars."

He brought their clasped hands to his lips. "Then... so long as you will it, we will never be parted."

Lucy sighed with contentment and brought him closer. She gazed at the beautiful tawny rays of the falling sun, thinking about everything that had transpired on this day and all that would pass between them.

"You'll hurt your eyes doing that," Martinus added.

Lucy looked at him instead. "I love you, Martinus."

"I love you too, Lucy."

Their lips met, and brown strands met golden ones, aflame in the dying light. The sand was their witness and the rumbling ocean their approving audience, and Martinus, her eternally faithful lover. Lucy thought to herself that nothing could be more perfect in the world.
