"Morax!" the kitsune held out his hand, trying to grab the archon's arm.

"Ajax..." Morax looked up, apologetically, "I shall see you again. No matter how many years it takes..." he smiled, letting go and falling into the core of the earth.

"Morax!" he screamed, tempted to fall in after him if it weren't for two arms holding him back.

"I'm sorry," Yae Miko apologized. "There is nothing to be done now."

"Why?!" Ajax screamed, sobbing into his hands as his fox ears fell flat against his head. Yae Miko turned him into herself, hugging him as he sobbed into her chest. The crater in the earth ate itself dozens of times, finally closing. "Why did he have to sacrifice himself for those people? They don't even worship him! Baal...Beelzebul... where were they when Inazuma needed them?!" Ajax grabbed Yae Miko's shoulders and glared at her, gritting his teeth as his tail bristled. "Why did it have to be Morax?!"

"I understand you're upset..." Yae Miko attempted to soothe him.

"I'm not upset!" Ajax shoved her away, his nails growing in length as his teeth sharpened. "I'm furious! Mark my words, one day, I will seek vengeance on that electro archon!" He sank to the ground, having lost his rage, and held his face in his hands. His shoulders shook as he sobbed. "I will...I'll have it..."

...

"This is a humble shrine but I quite enjoy it," Yae Miko smiled, staring up at Ajax who rested on the roof. He stared at the sky.

"I'm glad you approve. I doubt Inazumans will appreciate a shrine to Morax hidden in Mt. Yougou. They've become obsessed with their absent archon." Ajax curled his hand into a fist. "They quickly forgot who saved them and now believe she did."

"Ajax, it's no good to dwell on these things," Yae Miko sighed, holding out her arms and shrugging, shaking her head.

"Easy for you to say, look at the shine they've given you."

"I'm protecting a sacred tree, Ajax, this has nothing to do with-"

"Whatever helps you sleep at night," Ajax rolled over, ignoring her now.

...

"Oh!" a kid fell on his ass. He found the path to the shrine accidentally while trying to reach the summit.

"Oho?" Ajax leaned over the kid as his ear twitched. He blew from his kiseru and an enchanting smoke rested on the kid's face. He had long black hair with golden tips. His eyes the same shade as Ajax's beloved Morax. But, even with these clues, the yokai didn't recognize him. Perhaps because it had been so long since he'd been able to envision his face in a dream.

"Can you see me?" Ajax's tail twitched, as did his ear.

"I'm sorry to intrude!" the kid stood up and bowed. "Please don't eat me!"

"Hmm," Ajax placed his hand on his head and ruffled his hair. "Young boys aren't my type," he pressed the kiseru to his lips again. Ajax moved his hand down the side of the boy's head and to his chin, lifting his head up to look at him. He grinned, tilting his head to the side as his ear twitched. "Why don't you come back to visit when you're an adult? I'll show you a good time."

"W-what?" the boy blushed, taking a step back.

Ajax chuckled, and turned to go back toward the shrine. He picked a leaf from the branch of a tree and engulfed it in his fox fire, the leaf changed itself into a bird and flew toward the kid. "Follow that little one and you'll reach your destination," he pointed with his long nail toward the path. "Bye-bye now," he waved.

...

"You want to what?" Ajax scoffed, emptying the kiseru into its tray.

"I humbly ask that you allow me to work at this shrine as you await Master's return," the yaksha repeated, bowing.

"Absolutely not."

"Please?"

"Hm, come back in ten years or so, I'll think about it," he shooed the yaksha off.

...

"Today is the day I get you to fight me!" the oni placed his hands on his hips and grinned.

"No, it isn't," Ajax motioned with his hand and a barrier formed between the hole in the rocks and the path to the shrine. It kicked the oni out and he fell on his ass.

"The fox lady said you were a valiant warrior! She said if I managed to beat you, she would fight me!"

"That damned Yae Miko," Ajax snarled, adding a second barrier for good measure.

"Fight me!"

"No."

"Fight me, coward!"

"No, you lunatic."

"Have you lost your touch? Being cooped up in here for centuries?" Itto smirked. Ajax's veins popped on the side of his forehead. He closed his eyes and clutched his hand into a fist. He added a third barrier to block out the sound.

"Maybe he'll go away once he realizes I can't hear him," Ajax relaxed, climbing up to the roof of his shrine. He stared at the sky, from what little of it he could see now. "The mountain has changed quite a bit since then, hm?"

...

"Excuse me," a human male leaned over the sleeping kitsune's face. Ajax's ear twitched but he didn't open his eyes. "Are you the yokai of this shrine?"

"Hm?" Ajax's eyebrow moved slightly in annoyance. "And who might you be?"

"I've come to give offerings to Morax-"

"Is this some kind of joke?" Ajax's eyes snapped open and he stared at the human's face. "No human has come here in centuries to give offerings to Morax."

"Then, if you won't allow me to give them to Morax, may I give them to you?" he held out a plate of dango.

"What's this?" Ajax sniffed the plate, curious, but not enough to eat it.

"It's not poisoned..." the human insisted.

Skeptical, Ajax picked up a stick. He licked the first one and then his tail moved back and forth slightly. He ate one, and then another, before cleaning the whole plate. He grinned. "Aha...I haven't had human food in so long," his lips curved upward further and his tail wagged back and forth.

"I'm glad you like it," the human smiled a bit. Ajax eyed him up and down, placing his fingers on his own chin to think. His hair was long with golden tips and his eyes...they felt familiar. He couldn't place it. He ruffled his hair, trying to jog the memory, but Ajax still couldn't remember.

"Is something wrong?" the human asked the fox.

"No," Ajax replied crossing his arms. "You've given your offering, go away now," he shooed him off.

"Am I allowed back here again, now that I'm an adult?" he pointed to himself.

"It isn't good for humans to associate with the supernatural," Ajax shooed him off again.

"What if I bring more dango?"

"Well then," Ajax closed his eyes, blushing slightly, "I suppose it can't be helped."
