Lumine looked out of the window. The cab that was driving them towards their new prestigious school went fast and she could see trees speeding by the windows. As she pressed her nose against the glass, she could see the first buildings in the far distance. On her left was her twin brother, reading something on his phone screen she couldn't see. She wondered if he felt the same kind of chill that had kept her awake for the past three hours. They had been through a lot together and mostly shared their feelings, yet this evening he looked so distant.
"Brother?" Lumine asked, turning her head to face him. 'Are you okay?" Aether mumbled something, then clicked off his phone screen, dropping it in his lap. "Are you also nervous?" he asked. His eyes stood worried. It reminded Lumine of the time she told him the girls at school wouldn't leave her alone. Now, this would be a new school, a new chance. But yet she was scared. She nodded, and Aether sighed. "Things can repeat, and yet, they can not. I don't know how to explain this... But let's say I'm glad you won't have to deal with the girls from our last school anymore. We are far, far away from them now."
Lumine saw the cab driver look into the mirror, their eyes locking for a split second before he concentrated on the road again. They had already been driving for three hours straight, and she got bored of the endless buzzing of the car and the lights and trees and all the other things out there that had simply no importance in this vehicle, that seemed to work as a time vacuüm. It felt the same as the mixed feelings Aether had just described. On one hand she was glad to be here, in this safe space where it felt like time did not pass, but on the other hand she wanted it to be over, she wanted to know what she could expect, and their was no other way then straighten her back and march towards the future. As the lights grew closer and brighter, Lumine wondered off into a world she had been living in not so long ago.
"Aether! What is the use of it?" their mom yelled at Aether. She clearly was mad, her cheeks red in a way Lumine disliked. "Mother, you don't know what they did. I couldn't let them get away with it."Aether responded in a way too calm voice. "Well, guess what? Your little journey of vengeance ends here. You were kicked out of school, Aether."
Their normally always so understanding mother had been so angry at him. Lumine didn't understand. All her twin brother did was protect her, why couldn't her mother understand? Not that her mother was such a good mother; she'd leave for work projects and would not return for days, and when she came back and her two children were tired and underfed, it was their own fault.
She jolted back to reality when the car stopped. She wasn't looking forward to the new school, but at least it would be better than being stuck at home. Anything would be better than being stuck at home.
Aether was quieter than ever, his gaze outside, before opening the car door and stepping out to get their luggage. Lumine sighed and also opened the door, stepped out and stretched. It had been a long drive and it felt like both her legs were sleeping. They had driven for three hours. She looked up to see the massive building.
Teyvat High was a boarding school. They would live in dormitories. She knew her mom had payed a lot to let them go to this school, but there was no other choice. No other school would let Aether enter after the incident and he wouldn't leave without Lumine. So their mom had no other choice.
Lumine jiggled her legs in hopes to feel them again and walked to the back of the car to pick up her bags. Aether waited, still quiet, and payed the cab driver.
It wasn't that they were poor, or anything; money enough. It was just that Lumine didn't like to spend it on unnecessary things. She might have been too kind-hearted, too naive, to pure; but she always thought that if she spend all her money on unnecessary things it would be unfair for those that couldn't even buy a proper meal.
And so she only carried two bags, that held all her belongings. Same went for Aether. He didn't really care about material stuff; he thought happiness, thoroughness and love were the more important things in life. Maybe that was because of their raising, or the lack of it. They both searched for a higher being. A state that would clarify all the trouble that they had been through.
And so they had begun their search for happiness, that they might find on this school.
"Are you coming?" Aether asked. Lumine snapped out of her thoughts, smiled, and begun walking towards the stairs glowing in the last light the sun shone. This is a new beginning. I hope.
