A/N: I never got to explore the partnership between Catherine and Phil as much as I would have liked too. If you watched Agents of SHIELD than you'll know that Phil didn't actually die. I know at the end of the show he does, but for the sake of this one shot, he doesn't. This takes place approximately two years after the end of Infatuation (not the epilogue).
The sun was beaming on Catherine's bare legs as she sat on a blanket in the front yard. She watched her little family run around the yard on a beautiful May Day with a joyful expression on her face. Bucky and Will were chasing each other while Hannah tried desperately to keep up with her dad and big brother. The spring breeze flew her wavy hair back and she wiped a stray hair out of her face.
It was blissful. It was everything Bucky and she ever wanted in life. She had a rare day off during the week. Being the Assistant Director to a government agency on top of being an Avenger was not an easy job. It was time consuming, but she enjoyed it. She also enjoyed spending time with her family. They had spent most of the day outside playing or doing yard work.
"There's someone at the front gate, ma'am." FRIDAY's voice spoke from the Apple Watch around Catherine's wrist.
Shortly after she became the Assistant Director of SHIELD, both Bucky and her decided to amp up security. They had a gate put in front of their driveway. With the help of Bruce they had Tony's AI program, FRIDAY installed into the house so she could watch while they were away. William had been put into a private school meant for children of politicians and government officials.
It was mostly to protect their children. Catherine and Bucky were more than capable of defending themselves. Their children were not. Not yet at least.
"Who is it FRIDAY?" Catherine asked.
"He has a retired SHIELD agent ID. Shall I let him in?" The AI asked.
Catherine stood up and smoothed out the shorts she was wearing. "Umm, sure."
A moment later, a car began to drive up the driveway. Bucky noticed the intruder as well and his whole body stiffened. They had security, but he was still cautious when it came to his family. He walked over to Catherine and placed his hand on hips as he fought to catch his breath from chasing William and Hannah.
"Who is it?" He asked.
"No idea." She said, not taking her eyes off the car. "They have a retired SHIELD ID. I don't think it's a threat though."
The car finally stopped and the driver door opened. At first, neither Buck nor Catherine could see who it was. It was definitely a man. Probably late 40s, early 50s. A pair of sunglasses covered his eyes. He had short brown hair. He looked familiar to Catherine, but she had met a lot of people in her lifetime. Then he took the sunglasses.
Her knees almost hit the ground. She thought she was seeing things. He was dead. She had sat there, hand pressed into the gaping wound, begging him to fight. Bucky noted the tension in her body. The way her face paled. Her lips parted. He reached out to gently touch her lower back. "You okay?"
"N-No." she managed.
"Who is it?" Bucky asked. "Do I need to kill him?"
She shook her head. "No. It's Phil Coulson."
"Phil Coulson? Your old partner? Isn't he suppose to be dead?" He asked.
"Yeah. That's why I'm shocked. Stay with the kids. I need to see what this is about. Something is playing a joke on me evidently."
Her feet didn't want to move. She didn't want to approach the man. She needed to know why he looked like Phil though. The closer she got to him the more she could see the details of his face. It was a damn good clone of him.
