The woods never scared me. Even as a little kid, all it was was thick tall trees. My best friend Evelyn didn't agree. "Why do we have to go into the woods as part of our training?" She complains as we walk with the rest of the Counselors to the front of camp. I scoff and crack up at her cowardice. "What's the big deal? The woods is nothin', or maybe it is to a chicken like yourself." She grimaces and starts to get angry. "Don't call me a chicken Dinah!" I fire back, "Buck buck bagawk! Don't be one and I won't call you one. Now let's get goin! The geezer that they call the boss will have us by the tail if we ain't back in time." I can tell she wants to keep arguing but she nods and we go to join the rest of the group. As Evelyn runs up ahead to greet her boyfriend Dave, I slowly walk with my hands in my pockets, and before I reach the campfire I hear something in the tree line. "By the sea, by the sea, by the beautiful sea, You and I you and I, oh! How happy we'll be..." I whip my head around as if someone told me Cary Grant was right behind me. When I turned, the tune seemed to stop- like someone had taken a record off of a phonograph. When I realize how far I am behind I start to speed walk, don't want everyone thinking I'm a nut because I stare at the trees. When I turn around one last time I hear the tune very faintly in the distance...and I see a figure standing amongst the evergreens. I only got a glance of it before I got to the campfire but it looked like an impossibly tall man with a suit. A suit as black as the night and a tie as red as blood. The rest of the day completely flew by...We saw a lot of really neat nature areas but throughout it- I couldn't stop thinking about what I might've seen at the edge of the woods.
"So are we gonna sneak out later tonight?" Evelyn pesters Dave as we sit in the mess hall. "Sneak out...to do what?" Evelyn gives him a suggestive look and I roll my eyes. Evelyn's boyfriend is the most doll dizzy crumb I ever met. Evelyn says he's so dreamy but I think he ain't nothing more than a small-dicked Fathead. "Yeah we can go out tonight" he says after thinking about it for a while. Evelyn squeals and I stare down at my plate. After a bit, I come to a realization. "Mind if I come with you guys?" I blurt out without thinking. Evelyn looks over at me like I just flipped my wig. I can sense her gears turning but she obliges and says "Sure" she looks over at Dave and adds "You might not see too much of us though." I nod and say that it's fine. I now think this night is gonna be swell, I get to check out what that "thing" might be in the woods.
After lights out me Evie, and Dave all sneak out the back of the counselors cabin. As we begin to walk into the woods I hear the tune very faintly again, but it's different. "It's a sleep, a sleep a beautiful sleep, You and I you and I, oh! How happy we'll be..." "Do you guys hear that?" I whisper to the 2. "Hear what Dinah?" Dave asks. "The song!" I say and lower my voice even more. "Dinah what in the world are you talking about, you sure ain't being off the cob?" I shake my head frantically but from their looks neither of them believe me. "It was probably nothing Dinah '' Evelyn assures me and the 2 keep walking. When they get about 15 feet away from me I hear the tune again and I start walking towards it. Evelyn and Dave start giggling and walk off the path. I walk the opposite direction toward the tune, slowly it becomes louder and louder. "It's a sleep, a sleep a beautiful sleep..." the tune drones on as I walk closer and closer. I see the figure in a clearing, standing in the same black suit. "You and I you and I, oh!" I look up at his face. The tune plays on. "Oh! How happy we'll be..." Its face is plain and white like a ghost. A face with no eyes.
