You kept your distance as Jimin talked to your family and Jungkook, your back pressed to the wall as you listened from the shadows, heart hammering in your chest.

Now and then, Jungkook let out a lighthearted laugh, and your mother cooed in amusement, her voice full of warmth. But the sound only made your stomach tighten with unease.

What did they talk about? What had Jungkook said to make her laugh like that? Was it enough to convince her? Was it enough to sway your family's opinion?

Doubt gnawed at you. What if this whole plan was a failure?

You barely knew Jungkook; now, it felt like you never would. There was no time to truly understand him. Not when he was so willing to throw Taehyung under the bus. If he could do that so easily—well, a future with him seemed more and more impossible by the second.

The chatter died down, the laughter fading into the background. You peeked around the corner, your eyes darting quickly to the sitting area. Empty.

The entrance to the music room was only a few feet away, and you could hear the faint chime of the piano keys floating through the open door. A soft, melodic invitation to slip away from the chaos.

You tiptoed down the hall, your heels clicking softly against the marble. You drew a deep breath, steadying yourself before reaching out to trace the cool wall, trying to keep your balance and nerves.

Before you could take another step, a smooth voice slid into your ear.

"My, how ravishing you look today," Jungkook's voice purred from behind you.

Your breath caught in your throat.

You whipped around, nearly stumbling into the music room's doorway, your heart hammering in your chest. The sound in your ears made your already shaky legs threaten to give way beneath you.

Jungkook chuckled. "Why are you slinking against the wall like a snake?" He took a step forward, a hand extended toward you to steady you. "Don't worry. He's too focused to care about your footsteps."

Your eyes flicked to your cousin Jimin, who had appeared breathless in the hallway, a sweat glistening across his forehead.

It was so stupid. You were being so careless.

Jungkook was sharp—too sharp. He wasn't going to let you slip away from him that easily. Not when there was so much at stake.

Jungkook's smirk grew as he eyed Jimin, who was still trying to catch his breath. "Oh, Sir Park," he sneered. "Were you so tired of the family chatter? Need another bath?"

Jimin forced a strained laugh, though you could see the tension in his shoulders. The mask he wore was flawless, but you knew him too well.

"My aunt is quite the talker once she gets going," he replied, though his eyes flicked back toward you nervously. "Had to excuse myself for a moment."
