I yanked on all my clothes, adding a warm coat and scarf. I walked out the apartment, locking it, and took the elevator downstairs.
I ran out the front doors. This is when you need a car. I thought angrily, my feet thudding on the pavement.
I didn't even know which way she went, but at least she couldn't have gone too far; not with a dislocated shoulder and an unborn baby.
I ran towards work, weaving through the people on the pavement, but I couldn't see her; so I turned around, cursing, and ran back the other way.
While running, I pulled my phone out and called her.
"Wrong number." She said. Her voice sounded hollow, lifeless. "I'm not Ella."
I took in all of the background noise on her end; music, cars, and a barking dog. She must be near the larger single-story apartments. "I love you Olivia."
She coughed, "Bye," and hung up. I shoved the phone back into my pocket and sprinted in the direction of the residential end of town; it wasn't far from our apartment, and they were all on the one street.
