Someone had come knocking on the front door of Gbenga's office after closing hours, and it startled him. No one had ever come looking for him at that hour because they knew the office was closed at that hour.
He didn't like the knock on the door coinciding with the time he had wanted to call the governor. It made him feel uneasy such that he began to think that the governor had already anticipated him by sending someone. He got up and went to open the door but first, he wanted to know who was knocking.
"Who is it?" He asked, as he took hold of the door handle. He waited for a response from the person standing outside, but he only got silence. Without thinking too much, he opened the door wide only to find an elderly man standing and staring at him, holding a walking stick. He looked closely at the man and realized that, it was the same man that had been sent to retrieve the file with information on the governor's husband.
Seeing the man standing opposite him, he knew that the governor had come for the information that she needed. Shocked at her rapidity, he wondered what awaited him. Back then, when she was yet to become governor she has sent the same man to pick up the file containing information on her husband.
Now that she was first lady, and wielded so much power, he was sure that she would use her executive powers against him.
"Hello sir, how may I help you?" His heart was pounding fast as he greeted the man.
"Do you remember me?" The man asked, as he stepped inside the office. Gbenga ignored him and closed the door.
"Please sir, come and have a seat." Gbenga led the way and when the man sat down, he also went to sit down.
"How may I help you, sir?" The man stared at Gbenga angrily. He was sure Gbenga was joking.
"Are you saying you don't know why I am here?"
"No, sir."
"Then I suggest you think very carefully." Silence ensued as Gbenga thought about what to do next. He simply couldn't hand over a file containing information on Jamaica to the man sitting opposite him.
He had to find a way to dismiss the man but knew that, no amount of convincing would ever make the man go away. And besides, if it was the governor that had really sent him, then surely he wouldn't leave without the file.
"Sir, I do not know why you are here. And in all honesty, I was about to go home." The man nodded and then picked up his phone and dialed a number. Soon standing in front of the door were the same men who had come with him during his last visit.
"I think it's best you open the door." He told Gbenga, as he stood up. Gbenga imagined what would become of his life if he opened the door. He was sure that he would face an army of thugs who would brutally beat him to death.
He feared for his life and had to take a quick decision. He approached the door and in doing so quickly brought out his phone and switched on the phone cam to record everything that was about to take place. He then put the phone back into his upper coat pocket and opened the door.
As he opened the door, three men wearing dark suits, impolitely barged in. One of the three men gave him a slight nudge making him almost lose his balance. The man looked at him and laughed.
"Mr. man, my men have not even touched you and look at how you are dancing. What will happen when they start beating the hell out of you?" Gbenga composed himself and went to sit down while the three men stood near the door.
"Sir, with all due respect I demand to know why you are here?" Gbenga breathed hard as he looked at the man with intensity. The man simply ignored him and looked at the three men and slightly tilted his head.
