All heads turned toward the meek, little boy standing under the arch. His fists were clenched and sweaty as everyone whispered amongst each other. What do you think his gift will be? What if he doesn't get one? I'm glad it isn't me standing there. Multiple voices blended together in a whirlwind of panic.
He turned towards a silhouette in the shadows, his hand outstretched. "I need you," he whispered to it, his dark pleading eyes capacitated with worry.
I felt the crowd draw in a breath as Mirabel stepped out, her bright outfit standing out against the monotone atmosphere.
"Let's get you to your door," She assured the boy, as the duo walked through the crevice of people and up the stairs.
I felt someone move up near where I has been standing, and a familiar yellow poncho materialized next to me. "Enjoying the show?" He inquired, wiggling his eyebrows. "Never seen anything like it," I answered truthfully, my eyes trained on the sparkling, growing candle in Abuela's arms.
After promising an oath of safety and security, the boy named Antonio placed his hand on the doorknob. All of a sudden, all the magic flowing in Casita seems to burn brighter, just as the candle blazed with a newfound life.
A toucan landed on the dark eyed boy's arm. They conversed as the people of the town watched in pure awe. The flapping of multiple sets of wings could be heard in the distance, and all of a sudden, the Casita burst into life with critters surrounding Antonio on all sides.
"We have a new gift!" Abuela announced, smiling triumphantly at the gathering. "This calls for a celebration!" Everyone piled into Antonio's new room.
What met us inside was a sight of wonder. A large waterfall crashed down in the center of the room, while trees, mushrooms, vines and branches embraced it from all sides, the water flowed clean and true, while wind shifted through the branches as if we had been transported to a different dimension altogether.
"We must capture this moment, as it is a wonderful moment for us all," Abuela motioned everyone inside the frame.
"LA FAMILIA MADRIGAL!"
I felt a presence next to me, and glanced sideways at Mirabel. She returned my gaze, but it felt like she wasn't looking at me. Rather, she was looking through me.
"Mirabel?"
"I have to go," she blurted out, and raced through the crowd, bumping into others in her haste to get outside.
I stood there stunned, not knowing whether to chase after her or give her some time alone. Thankfully, my internal conflict was solved for me.
"May I have this dance?"
end.
