"Talk?" jay sighed.
"Talk."
He handed me the brownie container and took Nutella jar and two spoons while going upstairs. I followed him. He unlocked terrace door. I have lived here for long time than him and I never got the keys to terrace. That's suspicious.
There were mattresses, coffee table from living room and fairy light on roof wall. How did I not noticed coffee table was gone from living room? Also, when did this all happened?
"let's sit first. I'll explain everything?" jay said covering me with blanket, taking stuff from my hands. I somehow can't process when he did all of this? I have so many questions.
I sit down and somehow, I can't seem to be angry on him. That's weird. I was so much angry on him but as soon I came home and ate. The anger is gone. He hands me soda can and sat beside me.
"Ask anything. I'll answer."
"When this all happened? This décor?"
"After lunch. I came home and did this."
"Why did you leave me alone today?"
"I didn't exactly left you alone."
"Liar."
"I left for forty-two minutes, I counted. I came back as fast I could and stood there all day, I was worried too. I saw you getting anxious, stretching, yawing. Later, I was confused when you counted money and kept them tight and started walking as if you were going to wander around. To be honest, I knew from your behavior that you knew all about Rajan going back to India. I am sorry that I didn't have guts to inform you. I played like a fool. I was wrong. I can never leave you alone."
"Since when all that happen?"
"Three months back."
"What exactly happened?"
"After Kenna died, Rajan filed murder case against your father. There was no strong evidence to hold against him, he was set free but later he framed Rajan and court believed him. Later, Rajan was proven innocent and Kenna's murder was made accident. That all didn't stopped Rajan to go against your father. He kept finding proofs. He installed baby walkie talkie in the house. The conversation was recorded between Kenna and your father but that proof was not enough. He contacted neighbor next door but they refused to talk. He checked Kenna's phone and found all call recording. He said that she used to record when her parents called. There were many call records from your mother. She always used to call Kenna and warn her. The day Kenna died, your mother told her to run away. Your mother knew that your father was going to kill her that day."
"That can't be true. Kenna was smart. If she was informed before, she would have saved herself. She would live. Also, I know my mother. She would have never let this happen. She can't stay quiet after knowing her daughter is going to die. She can't..." I close my eyes really hard hoping this is a dream, bad dream. This all can't be true.
I don't know why but I am shaking, there are suddenly voices in my head of my father yelling. The train of flashbacks starts in my mind. How did I never noticed this, I was there with them living under same roof. Sharing food at table, did he killed his own daughter and came back home like nothing happened. Also, my mom cooked food and served with smile like she didn't just lost her own child.
Jay holds my shaky hand and pats my shoulder. I am trying so hard not to cry. I don't want to drop a tear. I can't cry. I have to stay strong.
"You can cry." Jay whispers.
"It's okay. I am not that weak."
"Life is hard doesn't mean you have to be. It's okay to shed tear. Holding back isn't always brave." He says giving me handkerchief.
"I am fine, seriously."
"Don't ever lie to me." He says opening Nutella jar.
"Why did Rajan waited all these years when he had proofs?"
"He found those recording two years later. At that time, he was all set to prove that your father was murder but Rajan got to know that you were getting married. At that time rescuing you was top priority. We all were worried what if your father does something to you. Thank universe that we kidnapped you safely."
"Thank you so much and I am sorry. If it weren't for me, my father would have been in jail then."
"You are silly. You have nothing to be sorry about. No wonder Rajan kept this secret from you. He knew you would blame yourself all over again." He said passing me brownies.
"All is fine now. You got permanent residence here in New Zealand and Rajan was relived that he could go back to India and get justice to Kenna."
"Thank you." I am so close to let my tears out.
"But why are you here? Why would you leave everything back at India and come here?"
"I told you before and I am saying it again. I can never leave you alone."
That's every thoughtful of him and I wish him he could really find his own way to live and not just do anything because of me. Rajan might had hard time keeping all with him. How did I never notice? I just happen to found email from some lawyer that Rajan application was succeed against my father. I just closed laptop in hurry and didn't even bother to read it all. I was scared but after knowing everything I am scared bit more, hope everything over there goes right. Dear god, please help Rajan. Give him strength to survive this time.
"Don't overthink it. Everything will be fine."
"I can't help it. Also, I am sorry for getting angry on you today and thanks a lot of clarifying the truth."
"Anytime. Let's just stay here for while and tell me where did you hid my cookies? They were special cookies."
"I ate them." I giggled. I forgot that I hid them.
"NOOOO."
"Special cookies?"
"I made them for the first time, the airport security told me to drop them but I found my way to sneak them."
"Wow, no wonder they tasted so good."
"You didn't eat them all, right?"
"Maybe."
he laid down and pouted in anger saying "Fine, goodnight."
I couldn't resist but laugh.
