Damien's pov

"Victory is mine!"

I had just escaped an old rosebush absolutely packed with rosehips. I fought my way out valiantly, with not one, but two jars full of the little buds. I lifted my hand to the bush and a jet of water went forth and water the it. It supplied me plenty of rosehips, so the least I could do was give it a good spray down.

My name is Damien Calderis. For as long as I could remember, I lived with an evil (read teddy bear) witch called Sofia Calderis. When I was a tiny kid, she found me running for my my life and took me in. She taught me witchcraft, how to hunt, how to recognize edible plants, how to cook...she was like a mother I never remembered. Up until a week ago we had it all. Then people from the neighboring human village killed her.

I packed what I could and got out of there. I had to climb a ridiculously tall mountain and make my way down. That alone took a week. I tripped and rolled down the mountain for about fifty feet when I fell in the rose bush. Now I'm all covered in slightly bleeding cuts from the bush, a gash from a rock when I was falling, my hair full of leaves, my lovely alabaster skin smeared with mud and dirt, and my belongings well protected with a safety charm done my "evil" Mother. Now your all caught up. Join me on my journey, if you dare!

I slung my bag over my shoulder and continued walking, After a few minutes, I found a river with a bridge leading to a beautiful, and very colorful village. I paused to gaze upon the beauty, and sat my happy butt down. Time for lunch. I dug out a rabbit I caught earlier and started a small fire. I cooked the rabbit and while I ate it, I put my little pot over the fire and cooked my rosehips in water with a some moon sugar.

I heard a squeak and turned to see a young lady with big brown hair, dark skin, big brown eyes, a red and white dress, and a shocked look on her face.

I lifted my uninjured arm to greet her, but she ran into the village. I don't blame her for being frightened. My normally lovely black hair was mud brown and full of sticks and leaves. It was also covering most of my face, save for my left eye and nose. I probably looked terrifying. I shrugged and continued eating my rabbit. When my rosehip syrup was done I put it back into their jars and placed them back into my bag.

I placed my bag a good two or three feet away from me and plunged my head into the icey cold river. I rubbed everything out of my hair and off my skin with my hands and shook my head in the water to get rid of a few stray leaves that somehow manage to stay.

I was pulled up from the water and slammed into the ground. I look to see who and it was the lady from earlier with a large man in a flashy yellow shirt and an older woman with a blue dress and apron.

"Hello. Nice to meet you all too. I'm sorry for the fright earlier Miss. I was just cleaning my hair and face."

The man slumped back, relieved.

"Dios Mio. You gave me a scare son."

The lady in blue approached me.

"How did you get so injured?"

"I rolled down the mountain for fifty feet. I'll be okay, no need to worry over me."

She gave me a warm motherly smile and handed me a small doughy disk.

"Here, eat this arepa. You'll feel better afterwards."

I took it and ate it, not wanting to be rude. I watched/felt all my bruises and cuts close and heal. I was surprised to say the least.

"Thank you Ma'am. Here, have this."

I pulled my bag to me and gave her a jar of my freshly made syrup.

"Rosehip syrup. Made it myself. It won't heal fantastically like your arepa, but it does have a lots of healthy vitamins and minerals. It goes great with warm milk and sweets."

I blushed lightly and rubbed my neck, chuckling. I stood up, now the same height as the lady in the red and white.

"How rude, I didn't introduce myself yet."

I smiled at them and held out my hand for them to shake, but quickly retracted since they hesitated to reach out.

"My name is Damien Calderis."

"I'm Juileta, and this is my brother in law Felix, and my niece Dolores. Would you like a tour of the village?"

"That would be nice. Thank you Miss Juileta."

"I'll take Dolores back home and tell Abuela."

Felix left and I followed Juileta with my bag over my shoulder. I got a lot of strange looks from all the elders and most of the adults. The tour ended with her home.

"This is the home of the Madrigals. Come on in, meet the rest of mi familia."

I walked into the house to everything being in an uproar.

"Juileta! There's a new door!"

"What do you mean?"

I look away from the woman with a flurry of hail above her head and saw a flurry of golden wispy trails next to a door covered in flowers. A little boy tugged on my pant leg.

"What's up little man?"

"Who are you? I'm Antonio."

"I'm Damien."

"Damien dear, feel free to introduce yourself to everyone."

Juileta ran upstairs, following close behind the red haired lady.

"Well Antonio, want to introduce me to your family?"

"Okay. Panchi will come with us."

I was about to question who Panchi was, but he hopped on the back of a jaguar and led me to where everyone else was.

"That's Abuela, that's my Mama Pepa, my Papa Felix, my hermana Dolores, my hermano Camilo, my Tia Juileta, my Tios' Augustine and Bruno, and mi primas' Isabella, Luisa, and Mirabel."

Antonio wandered off to a group of rats, so I walked to the door with flowers. I knelt down and softly touched the petals. The were healthy and quite soft to the touch.

"You like flowers?"

I looked up and saw Isabella. I smiled and stood back up.

"Yes, they're very beautiful."

She gave me a big grin and held out her hand. A large bouquet of daisies and lilacs sprouted from her hand. I smiled back and held out my hand. A small stream of water sprinkled over the flowers, giving them an early morning dew look.

I was seized my the shoulder by the Abuela and yanked down to her level.

"How do you have a gift?! Who are you?!"

I panicked and pried myself away from her and jumped out of the nearest window. I rolled when I hit the ground and didn't stop running until I was past the bridge and up a tree.

"I haven't...run that much...in a week."

I hung my bag on a higher branch and tied myself the the tree with a thick homemade woven rope and dozed off.
