At the time that Vio had succeeded in bringing back Shadow, an illness that only effects shadows was spreading throughout the dark world. And it had just so happened that Shadow had caught it a few days before he had been pulled out.

The world was so bright to the shadow. A terrible cough wracked his figure as his body materializes itself. He vaguely registers that he's laying on the ground, and he's sitting in some sort of liquid. His ears ring, so he grabs them in a sad attempt to make it stop. He feels a hand gently grasp his shoulder. Instinct kicks in and he pulls away, a weak hiss falling like liquid from his mouth.
His ears ring more, light still blinding his eyes. He waves his arms around, trying to get the person away.
In the dark world, trust is not something you should put in anyone and currently Shadow's mind is fuzzy and he hasn't yet realized he isn't In that world anymore.
The person in the room is looking at him, he can feel their eyes on him. There isn't any malice in their eyes, he can tell that(he's had instances where he'd be summoned for malicious purposes. He still has the scars). There is more of worried look in the eyes. He closes his eyes and scrunches them up, trying to get the burning light off his eyes.
When he opens them again, he's met with a familiar face. Vio. His hair is long and matted, bags under his eyes. Sleep deprivation is stained on his figure, worry and a hint of adoration in his pale blue eyes.
"Vi...?" Shadow murmurs, but coughs soon wrack his figure again. He grabs at the floor, heaving and trying to catch his breath. Vio is quick to act, even in his sleep deprived state, his reflexes are still just as sharp. Vio helps Shadow up, holding him against his chest as he holds back tears. Shadow's ears ring again, Vio's mouth moving but all Shadow hears is ringing.
Vio gently pries Shadow's hands off his pointed ears, the ringing still there. It slowly fades and when it does Shadow can hear Vio humming softly as he rocks back and forth.
"You've gone soft ain't cha?" Shadow whispers, his voice hoarse and broken. The sound of the shadow's voice hurts Vio to hear, but he doesn't let that show.
"Maybe a bit." Vio says, his voice wavering as he smiles softly at Shadow.
Shadow smiles, but the soft moment between the two doesn't last as Shadow breaks back out into another coughing fit. He holds his sides as painful coughs wrack his body. Tears draw to his eyes as he struggles to breathe. His hearing goes in and out again, and when he can hear he hears Vio shout "RED!"
Shadow flinches at the noise, but that doesn't stop the coughing.
The red clad boy opens the door, Blue standing behind him. "What happened?!" The boy's hair is stained red at its edges, freckles dotting his face. His hair is fluffy and curly, and at the moment, all of it is in full display.
"I think I messed up somewhere! He hasn't stopped coughing!"
Red quickly plops down next to Vio, but Shadow doesn't see anything else that happens as he passes out.

Shadow wakes up with a start, grabbing at his chest as more ugly coughs wrack his body again. Tears draw to his eyes, and he still doesn't have much control of his physical form so they fall, and continue to. Cries of complete and utter pain leave him, his hands grabbing at everything around him. It takes him a moment to register the pale arms that wrap around him, and that he's being pulled into an embrace. All he understands in this moment is that he's struggling to breathe and everything hurts.
His body goes limp again and he falls forward on the person, his breathing starting to even out again.
The person, who was Vio, holds Shadow gently, running his fingers through Shadow's hair. "Is he okay?" A gentle and soft voice echos in the room.
"I hope..."
The second person walks over, setting a candle next to the bed. Red's face is illuminated by the candlelight, his blue eyes gaining a red tint as he looks at his purple counterpart.
"He just woke up and started crying.." Vio says. He's never felt so weak and helpless. No one has made him feel so hurt to see them in pain. Yes, he feels bad when his friends are hurt, but nothing compares to how much pain he feels at this moment. He's had to watch as the person who showed him how to love and to care goes through so much pain.
Red climbs up onto the bed, gently laying a hand on Shadow. A dim red light covers the shadow's body as Red searches for whatever is causing these reactions. Shadow isn't allergic to anything, and he can't get sick, so it couldn't be any of those..
"I don't know Vio..." Red says softly, laying his head on Vio's shoulder. Vio lays his head on top of Red's. "All I can say is that I know his condition will get better." Red says, lifting his hand from Shadow.
"I hope so.." Vio says, holding Shadow gently. Red clambers off the bed, picking the candle back up. "Get some sleep okay?" Vio nods, laying down. He hasn't slept in weeks and the only thing that's been keeping him awake is coffee, his determination to bring back Shadow, and some spell that Red casts on him.
The light in the room is taken and for once Vio doesn't have trouble falling asleep.

The morning after everything Shadow wakes up just as weak as before, but with Vio at his side. He moves a bit, and ends up waking up Vio.
"Sorry." Shadow says softly, a weak smile resting on his face. "And sorry for waking you up last night... being sick mixed with being put into a physical form doesn't mix well." Vio has the look of 'what-?' on his face.
"You.. you are sick?—" Shadow nods,"—I thought you couldn't get sick?" Vio says, Shadow smiling in response.
"I can, just not by earthly diseases. The shadow realm has sicknesses too. I just happened to catch this one before you pulled me out." Shadow explains, lifting his arms and examining the bandages that cover his forearms and hands. Now that he thinks about it, he can feel bandages on a lot of places. His neck, stomach, arms, one of his legs...
"When I pulled you out you were bleeding and covered in the weird liquid.." Shadow mentally huffed. "Yeah, I may or may not have fucked up a bit." Vio narrows his eyes. "What?"
"I uhhhh, may have gotten into a fight with some cousins and had my ass beat.."
"That's not the full story." Vio says, his eyes narrowed. "I can read you like one of my favorite books, you can't lie."
"I know." Shadow says, smiling at Vio. "I'll explain what all happened when I don't feel like I'm gonna fucking die." Shadow chuckles, Vio not very appreciative of Shadow's humor. "Haha very funny. Go to sleep or I'll knock you back out." "I- you knocked me out?! Is that why I kept passing out?!" Shadow says, disbelief in his voice. "Maybeeeee" Vio says, losing eye contact with Shadow.
"You dick!" Shadow says, playfully punching Vio. It didn't do anything as both of them are not in the best shape. The two share a moment of giggles and laughs before Shadow leans back to try to renew his strength.
