(Lilly will be played by Meaghan Martin)

Lilly POV

The principal was encouragingly voicing the importance of education, the beauty of literacy. How we should do whatever it takes to achieve our aim! Our ambition! Our goal!

And boy, could I be more bored.

All around me were students in white and red uniforms, the sluts who wore micro-mini skirts, the jocks chewing gum and acting cool, the nerds listening attentively to the droning Principal Sharma and me secretly playing Hangman with my best friend since 2nd grade, Sylvia.

Our friendship began on the day when I bought candy to school (which wasn't allowed, obviously) and the teacher took the candy and hid it in her shelf. So Sylvia sneaked in during lunch, stole the candy and we both ate it sitting on the swings. So you see, our bond is greater than mere friendship.

I looked around while Sylvia figured out the word I had given ('feline') when my eyes fall on him. Samuel Manford. Sam has been my crush since I began high school.

But him ever liking me? As likely as Beyoncé breaking up with Jay Z. (Which is never.) Why? Because he is the most popular guy in the school, is a senior with straight A's, is class valedictorian, and also on the basketball team.

And me? Oh me! I like cats.

That's pretty much it.

And, okay, I get pretty good grades most of the time but my intelligence always seem to take a vacation when Algebra period comes. So of course, him liking me? Highly unlikely.

"What eez this word!" Sylvia groaned. If you're wondering what's up with the 'eez', Sylvia's mom is French, so her accent is pretty much filled with 'eez's and 'zes's.

"Zes word can va au diable!" Syl whisper-screams which means 'This word can go to hell!'

I giggle and start telling her the word reluctantly when I hear my name being called.

By Principal Sharma.

"Miss Lilly Crest is requested at the Principal's office now" the speaker blares and I can feel stares burning a hole through my head. I get up, gulping visibly and walk as quickly as I can to the Principal's office. My heart is beating so fast, I'm afraid its going to come out of my chest.

***

I cannot believe this is happening. This is like meeting Taylor Swift. Or like sky-diving.

Okay, so I walked into Principal Sharma's office, freaked out of my mind, when she says, "Sit, Lilly."

So I sit.

Adjusting her spectacles she looks at me and goes, "So I'll come straight to the point. I was just talking to your English teacher and she seems quite confident about your speaking and debating skills. In fact, Miss Evans thinks you're quite exceptional when it comes to oratory. And as you know, our school participates in the Annual Debate Competition organised by Modern School every year... and loses," she adds loathingly under her breath before continuing, " and so, it is a matter of prestige, that wehave to win this year. So, I ask you, will you be ready to compete in the Debate Competition, Lilly?" she asks peering at me through her spectacles.

"Um," I say intelligently, "Okay."

"Good," Principal Sharma smiles at me and then what she says after sends my heart into over drive. "Of course, you will be practicising with the head of the Debate Club, Mr. Samuel Manford."

I, Lilly Crest will be representing Avalon High School in the Annual Debate Competition with Samuel Manford.
