Third person POV
Hawks kept eye contact with Suki for a long few seconds as the villain shouted and continued blasting fire from the palms of his hands
"You might think that, but I've seen you in action, there are loads of people who will miss you if you die. So, get to safety and I promise to get Eric back" Suki sighed with a nod earning a smile from Hawks.
She turns and runs towards the other heroes who then call over a medic to look at her wounds and get her to safety, of course, she declines and starts walking home in worried silence. The farther she got the more she wanted to run back and get Eric to safety. It was her fault for leaving him behind. She kept blaming herself for it, a part of her knew it wasn't her fault but she still blamed herself for something she could've stopped.Hawks' POV
I kept a close eye on Eric while the villain became surrounded with more heroes, I don't know why but Suki's words stuck with me. About how she'd die for another persons life instead of caring about herself, even if it was her nephew I could tell she'd do the same thing for anyone if necessary.
Suki's courage was impressive, as was her stubbornness and recklessness. The fires were still being put out and the villain was causing more and more fires to spread, I promised to bring Eric home safely and that's what I planned on doing. Eric was crying in fear and a turning formed deep in my stomach, he reminded me of me when I was a kid. But he was different in a way of having a lovely family that cared deeply for him, which brought me back to the conversation Suki and I had before the villain attacked.
"I feel that you're a selfish prick who only cares about what others feel about you, you don't care what other people think or feel, as long as you know someone loves you you'll do anything to be kept in that spotlight to drown out an old scar that you can't get ride of. Am I wrong?" She had the right idea but, she wasn't entirely right. I did have a scar mentally and physically, I used others as a way to fill in that hole I used their feelings as a way to heal the pain, to, to, make myself feel wanted.
Eric was different, he had a loving mother and father a loving aunt maybe even a loving sibling. But I never had that, which is why I'll do everything in my power to get him home safely. Every injury I get from villains they mean nothing, scars don't heal they fade, and from what I've been through they don't mean anything but a sign of victory.
A sign saying 'hey! I survived', it made me wonder if Suki was abused as a child by her parents and just see's herself just like me and is too stubborn to admit it "Hawks! You get the kid, we'll distract the villain" A hero not as famous as Endeavor or I but I knew him from somewhere, the attacking of UA or something? I nod in response watching as the mans eyes glow red and he charges forward with floating bindings or something and surprisingly the villain brought his attention to the hero and used Eric as a shield from the attacks, more heroes join the battle and I wait for an opening to grab Eric.
After a few minutes I saw the opening I needed to get him out of here, using my feathers Some blind the villains eye sight while another grabbed Eric and pulled him out of grasp, straight for me as well. He cried wildly clinging onto my jacket like he was going to get pulled back into the villains arms, I sigh in relief and fly off heading straight for Suki's pent house. Eric berried his head into my chest still silently crying I could feel him trembling in my embrace, he was terrified. Once inside the house Suki came running in from the other room wearing only her bra and some fresh bandages over the opened wounds. I blush slightly at the sight but quickly look away. The feeling of her arms sliding past mine and grabbing Eric from my arms she holds him close to her in a motherly way, she sighs in relief then looks me in the eyes with an expression I haven't seen her hold before.
"Thanks, Hawks, you kept your promise" Suki muttered setting Eric on the ground he clings onto her pant leg tightly sniffling into his shirt sleeve "I should get back to the fight" I turn to leave but feel someone cling onto my legs I already knew who it was but was still surprised to see Eric whimpering into his sleeve "Please don't go" Eric sniffled looking up at me wide teary eyed and scared.
Glancing to Suki she held the same look Eric did, slowly I nod, knowing I wouldn't be much help against the villain anyways, "Alright" His grip grows stronger and I could've swore I saw Suki smile at my answer. "Let's get you to bed alright Eric" Suki said calmly taking Eric by the hand leading him upstairs and to his room. After a few minutes she walks back downstairs and joins me on the couch with a sigh "How you holding up?" I asked calmly glancing down at Suki who seemed shorter than me
"Well, you brought Eric back safely and well, my injuries are worse than before so, I'd say I'm doing fine" Suki said calmly seeming as though she was telling the truth; I nod as we sat in silence listening to our thoughts before I spoke up.
"What you said earlier in the park, before the villain attacked. You were right, I just want to fill a hole that just never seems to get enough of the attention, but then again what you told me, how no one would care if you just died. You're wrong, Eric, your brother your sister, your co-workers... Me, we'd all miss you" I wrapped an arm around the couch making sure I wasn't being too touchy towards Suki.
Our eyes met and that same feeling from the park grew in my stomach I took the time to look over the details of Suki, she had a row of freckles across her face while her hair was a wavy red color and her eyes were the color of the sea, Suki's lips were plump and looked soft just by looking at her my heart skipped a beat and my stomach turned with that familiar want, I noticed a scar, just above her left eye, it was faded almost completely gone but it made me wonder if my thought from earlier was true, was she abused as a kid? If so she hid the pain all to well.
"You're like me, you feel the need to get love from others to heal a scar that can't been seen on the surface, wanting to get approval from others just so you can get that recognition you never got as a kid" Suki smiled sadly to herself uncaring if I saw her weak.
"Suki were you abused as a kid?" I asked abruptly making her eyes widen and stare into mine, I was right.
Quickly I wrap my arms around her comfortingly unrealizing I had done so. But surprisingly she hugged back "My mom was never a big fan of me as a kid, or my quirk, she'd hit me when my dad and brother weren't home, when my dad left because my mom got addicted to alcohol that's when she got really abusive, blamed me for dad leaving, my brother Akio she didn't touch him, in fact she admired him but he'd defend me from being hit and defended me for when I get something wrong. It worked for a while, up until he left for college, leaving me alone with her." Suki paused breathing shakily as I held her close, she was so similar to me that I could almost se the abuse she went though.
"I'm sorry that all happened to you" I whispered rubbing my hand up and down her back lightly being careful of the bandages now hidden beneath her white button up work shirt. "It's fine, it's in the past" Suki and I pulled apart slowly only to stare into one another's eyes yet again.Third person POV
Without realizing it the two, lean in close to the point where they felt each others breath against the other, their lips only inches away from touching just then, screaming was heard from upstairs it sounded like Eric, the two let out a breath they hadn't realized they were holding and Suki stands up quickly. "I should go check on him" She clears her throat awkwardly as Hawks too clears his throat and looks away from the direction she was standing in. "Yep, yeah, go" Hawks had never felt more awkward in his entire life.
Suki on the other hand was down right embarrassed and red faced head to toe, she was kind of glad Hawks was avoiding eye contact with her but felt kind of, excited? The two had nearly kissed and she was excited? She despised Hawks!
He was incompetent and had no remorse towards others feelings, well, that's what she kept telling herself. Now in Eric's room she flicks on the lights to see Eric crying in his sleep calling out to someone begging for them to leave him alone, Suki rushes over shushing his thoughts slowly bringing him back to reality.
He clings onto Suki like someone was trying to kill him, she continues to shush him in a calm voice as he relaxes and takes a deep breath Suki had a pretty good guess as to what his nightmare was about. "It's okay Eric, he can't get in here you're safe, I promise you're safe" Suki hugged Eric rubbing his hair calmly as she heard footsteps approach the room then stopped short of the door "Hey kid, you had a nightmare?" Hawks asked in a rather, fatherly tone. It surprised Suki Eric nods with a quiet whimper "Mind telling us what it was about?" Hawks sat beside Suki with a calm face keeping his eyes planted on Eric
"It was about the villain, he was chasing me and- and he, killed Aunt Suki and" Eric cried as Suki wrapped her arms around him tightly in a comforting manner
"Sh, it's okay, I don't die so easily" Hawks wanted to comment on that but held back the response knowing it wasn't the time.Time skip, later that night
Hawks stared at the ceiling with a dazed face, wings spread out on the bed and arms crossed, he couldn't get his mind off the almost kiss between him and Suki, what would've happened if they did kiss? They met only a few days ago, it was crazy! But then again, Hawks' dates usually ended as a one night stand.
A knocking on his door was heard but it was quiet, if he wasn't so awake he'd most likely sleep though the knocking, quickly he gets up and walks to the door, taking a breath he slowly opens the door enough to peak his head out, Suki was standing there with an awkward face, she seemed distracted
"Yes?" Hawks asked catching Suki's attention "Um, hey, I uh, I just wanted to thank you for helping in the room with Eric, I don't usually have him stay over for more than a day so I can't really cope well with his emotions sometimes, so, thank you" Hawks could tell that wasn't all she wanted to say.
"You're welcome, so, was that all or?" Hawks gestures Suki to come in and she does, hesitantly she takes a breath as the lights flick on and the door closes "Just because you saved Eric and are keeping us safe, doesn't mean that I'm warming up to you, this is just temporary until I'm fully healed, my business is rebuilt and Eric is back home with his family. So, don't get too comfortable" Suki said in a boss like tone but had the expression of a child, easy to read. Hawks doesn't dare point it out though.
Clearing his throat he nods in understanding and goes to speak feeling that same awkwardness as when they almost kissed "I understand" Is all that came out of his mouth and Suki's eyes widened expecting a 'but' or at least an 'Please don't do this' kind of response but that's all she got and it angered her
"So that's it. That's all you're going to say? No, no, protests, no nothing?" Suki growled as Hawks sighed "What else do you want me to say kid? 'Okay, I'll keep my word and just forget about you and Eric after the job is done' is that what you want me to say?" Hawks asked trying to keep his cool and keep the growing argument from getting worse "No, but it doesn't mean that's all you say, you could say 'I understand but I'm not going to forget about you or Eric'" Suki hissed in a louder tone only angering Hawks to shout back.
"I would never forget about Eric! Or you for that matter, how could I? You and that kid are like family to me. I wouldn't forget about him even if I started protecting another woman and her nephew!" Hawks shouted his wings twitching slightly in irritation. "And what if you never met me, or Eric? What then?" Suki shouted back glaring into the mans eyes with anger and hate "Then I'd do what I came here to ask Endeavor for help with." Hawks shouted rubbing his chin angrily shifting from foot to foot.
Suki growls and clenches her fists in a fit of rage. The two continue the argument for a few hours before they both give up and leave one another in brutal silence, the next few weeks the two didn't speak to each other, Eric noticed this and became worried. Of course his parents were coming back soon, he could feel it.
Eventually his parents did and heard about everything that happened but didn't blame it on Suki or Hawks but claimed it was bad timing, Suki was a fast healer so she was all healed up by next week and that was Hawks' cue to leave the two didn't even apologize before he left, Suki acted like she didn't care but deep down she did end up missing him.
